Chapter 4: Cold Eyes

Since it wasn't a weapon that was light blue like his, Kai assumed that it couldn't be a weapon that had been summoned. The weapon pierced the head of one bee quite easily, so it was the real deal.

"Could it be a drop? Like a game drop?" Kai frowned.

Kai had read some books where such things happen. The world began to end, and people were helped by the system or classes or something. In some cases, things like weapons and skill books can be obtained by fighting monsters.

"Another reason to keep looking for monsters," Kai smirked.

Kai saw three red bees trying to enter a restaurant, but the wooden door wasn't bulging in. Someone was barricaded themselves there… he tried to sneak and attack the bees from behind, but they turned around and found him, even though he didn't make any noise.

"They either have good hearing, or the runes that I obtained make me easier to detect," Kai thought while furrowing his eyebrows.

Kai fired two swords at one of the enemies killing it and then fired two at the same time toward the other bees. Once they flinched due to the damage, Kai grabbed their stings before they could recover completely and then stabbed one monster with the other sting. Since he made sure to target the heads, the monsters didn't have many chances to react, but it took a while for them to die.

"I guess this would be more visible if my endurance were higher…" Kai said while looking at the wounds on his hands. "No drops here either… the drop rate should be pretty low, then."

Kai felt that a weapon would help him fight for longer without relying too much on mana, which also would make him grow stronger and faster. Still, in the end, he also felt that he could use other options.

Just when he thought about where he could find such options, he saw a group crossing the crossroads in the opposite direction while being chased by a group of bees. Three of them had baseball bats… if he could find the metal ones, Kai was confident that he could have his fun for quite a while.

Kai went to check on those three guys after turning on the corner of the street and then saw one of them turning into a mummy. The second got hit in the arm, and only that body part began to lose blood and wither… the third was smashing the head of another large bee.

Kai approached while targeting the giant bee to get the rune, and while he helped kill the beast, Kai didn't receive that notification. While clicking his tongue, Kai targeted the final monster.

"That guy got the rune… and he didn't use the skills of his own class, or maybe he was out of mana," Kai thought. "It doesn't matter, though."

After approaching, Kai confirmed that they were high school kids who had been playing baseball until not long ago. The second with the wounded arm was in pain due to the wound, and the other was trembling while seeing their dead friend. Meanwhile, Kai just took the baseball bat from the corpse.

The kids looked at Kai as if he was a monster himself. He was dirty with blood, and he didn't even blink when he approached a corpse. He looked at them for a moment, but they couldn't see anything in his eyes. Fear, anger, empathy… nothing. Kai just turned around and headed in the opposite direction, imagining that the kids had left a metal bat wherever they had been.

I could see the field that the kids were using to play in the distance. However, I also saw numerous vehicles colliding with each other while a swarm of bees approached them. Soon after, I heard the sound of police sirens. When they approached, they began to shoot at them.

"I can't head in that direction… I need to move away from here to avoid the stray shots," Kai thought.

The chaos was still spreading, so moving around was going to be difficult. While Kai could see some points where the meteorites fell, he didn't find any of the big ones or the stones with the runes, for that matter. To get stronger faster, his best option would be to target monsters that killed those that obtained a class or find the nest of the beasts.

Kai began to run to take the roundabout way toward the park while looking for shops or buildings that could have decent weapons for him to use. During that time, he noticed that his stamina was being consumed every second… one point per second. That was way too weird. Kai wasn't frail enough that he could only run for a bit more than a minute…

"I wasn't supposed to be able to use magic either… so let's ignore this for the time being," Kai thought.

When Kai found the entrance of a small shopping mall, he found the glass doors completely shattered and several mummified corpses above each other. In the panic, they became easy targets when they tried to escape. In any case, since I stopped to move upon checking the entrance, the monsters inside approached to attack him…

"Come and get it," Kai said after he readied his bat.

There was no big bee among the group, and with the power of the level-ups, Kai managed to kill them in a single hit once he leveled up again. The best time for grinding was truly now… in any case. He could feel some resistance with each hit. Since his strength increased again, the weapon won't last for long.

All of a sudden, Kai heard some footsteps coming from behind, and then he returned before summoning another sword…
