Chapter 2: Prologue [2]

In a dark room, 7 old men sat on a long table.

“The condition of the core is worsening, it is most probably beyond saving anymore. When the core finally destabilizes completely, everything would be destroyed.” A man in a white coat said while pointing to a projector.

The projector was projecting a diagram of the earth's core.

Everyone at the table was thinking something. All 7 people were the presidents of the major countries still standing.

Reiner Bauer, the current German president, broke the silent atmosphere.

“I say, we should start the evacuation. The longer we hold on, the harder it will be later on.” Reiner said.

“I agree.” When the German President finished speaking, two other voices came from different sides.

One of them was the president of Italy, Marinella Capuano and the other was the President of India, Jitendra Padmanabhan.

Slowly, everyone agreed with the German President’s words and only one person remained silent.

It was the President of Korea, Wan Eun-Jung.

“What do you say, Miss Wan Eun-Jung?” Jitendra asked.

Eun-Jung said nothing and just nodded, agreeing to what he just said.

“Presidents, I believe we now need to break the news.”

Cynthia and Henry still lay on the sofa as they hugged each other.

“You still up, honey?” Henry asked. After receiving no reply, Henry smiled and picked up the remote of the T.V.

He switched through the channels, finding an interesting movie to watch.

In the end, he started listening to the news.

As he listened to them, he got more and more shocked. He suddenly shook Cynthia’s shoulder and woke her up.

“What is it?” Cynthia said in a sleepy voice and rubbed her eyes.

“Quickly get up and pack some necessities like water and food. We only have 5 days. Look at the news.” Henry said as he stood up and started changing his clothes to a tracksuit.

The headlines read.

“The core of the earth is destabilizing, the Presidents of major countries agree to reveal the news to ordinary citizens. Spaceships are going to launch in different cities in 5 days. Please reach the spaceship as soon as possible as not everyone can go.”

Cynthia was shocked for a moment. She never thought that the place she grew up in would end up getting destroyed like this, she never expected she would have her last days on earth and it was not because of her death but the planet’s.

“W-What do we do?” Cynthia said as she panicked.

Henry held her shoulders and said,” Don’t worry. Nothing will happen. We will leave right now and go to XX city. I checked that it has a spaceship. We three will survive. Since it is 1 A.M. right now, there should not be many people on the way.” 

Cynthia nodded and went inside to wake Rebeca up.

When Rebeca woke up, Henry thought,’ If she sees the news, she would most definitely cry and wake up people. It would be difficult to get out then. I was never evil, but I and my family have to survive.’

Henry took his rental car’s keys and went inside Rebeca’s room.

“You directly take the keys and sit in the car. I will come in a few minutes with a bag.” Henry said and handed the keys to Cynthia.

Cynthia nodded, took the keys and rushed to the basement parking while carrying her daughter.

Henry rushed to different parts of the house and packed things like medicines, packed food, bottled water and some clothes.

After the packing, Henry ran to the basement using the stairs instead of the lift.

When he reached the basement, he saw Cynthia sitting in the passenger seat and Rebeca sleeping in the back seat.

“You’re here!” Cynthia exclaimed and quickly handed over the key to Henry.

Henry turned on the car. The sound of the car woke Rebeca up.

“Where are we going?” Rebeca asked as she looked at her sitting in the car.

“We are going to visit Aunt Julia. She is very sick and said that she wanted to see Rebeca once.” Cynthia said as she took the bag from Henry’s hands and Henry started to drive.

“Really? Then, I won’t have to go to school?” Rebeca asked.

“Yes. Now, go back to sleep.” Cynthia said.

Rebeca was happy about not going to school and slowly slept while smiling.

“We are going to take the highway. It would take us around 4 hours to reach there. We won’t be stopping in between and I’ll drive as fast as I can, so we should reach it within 2 hours.” Henry said.

The temperature outside of the glass covering was not at all ideal for a car to be driven, so new underground highways were built that connected different cities to each other.

Henry entered one of them and stove as fast as he could.

His car was a good one out of the normal ones, so he drove 130 kmph+ all the time. Moreover, as Henry had thought, the highway was mostly empty due to the time they left and they covered a lot of areas until they finally saw some traffic.

-2 hours after the three left their house-

“It took us 2 hours to reach here. The traffic, in the end, got worse. It took us one hour to just cover 20 km.” Cynthia said as she brought Rebeca out of the car.

“Mom, when will we go to Aunt Julia?” Rebeca asked.

Before Cynthia could reply, Henry said,” We will go see her soon, princess. Let’s first visit that big ship in front of us.”

Henry said as he pointed towards a ship around as tall as a ten-storey building and as wide as a playing ground.

‘It should be able to take at least 10,000 people. But, this spaceship is responsible for over 10 cities, each with over 5000 residents. I should get into the queue quickly.’ Henry thought as he looked at the long queue.

After waiting for another hour, it was finally Henry’s turn. Police and army soldiers armed with guns maintained the decorum and made sure no one cut the line.

“Here you go, number 586. Are the two behind you, with you?” The man who was giving people number tags at the entry asked HEnry while pointing to Cynthia and Rebeca behind him.

“Yes,” Henry said.

“Alright. Number 587, 588. Now move on.” The man said. He pushed Henry to the inside of the ship and started giving number tags to the next people.

2 Days later, Henry, Cynthia and Rebeca had settled in one of the thousands of rooms on the ships.

“I have discovered a lot of things about this ship by now. Let me say, we were lucky.” Henry said as he held Cynthia’s hand and Rebeca slept between them.

“What do you know? Tell me.” Cynthia said. The two were a lot more relaxed now. Though they had to do laborious work every day, it was better than dying outside.

“Our country, which has the second-most population in the world, only had 4 ships in the country. This city had a ship because since the first three were sent to famous cities, this one was used for people from here. The ship is almost full, there are almost 10,000 people here.” Henry said.

Cynthia thought for a while and then asked,” Why was it sent here, to XX city?” 

“I heard it was because there are a lot of women in this area, which would mean that more women would help in repopulation. It was even announced that the last 1,000 people would only be women and no men would be able to get aboard.” Henry said.

“It is a good thing we came early,” Cynthia said.

“Yeah,” Henry said as he kissed Cynthia’s hand.
