"He went back just like that?" Han Yanyan asked incredulously. "Wasn't he in a hurry to resurrect his noble master?"
"Being anxious is useless. Anyway, his master has been dead for two years, there's no rush to resurrect him today," Leo said.
She was a little surprised. "Two years? I thought he had just died."
Leo sneered, "Aristocrats like them don't like my way of doing things. Only after two years of hard work were they desperate enough to come find me."
Han Yanyan stared at the fleet outside. "Is this the Duke's private fleet?"
"You're underestimating him. There's no way his fleet is only this big. This number of ships is likely just the Guards. The assassination and death of Duke Kline was probably tightly covered up, so they couldn't have made too much noise."
"He's a political leader, isn't he? In a situation like this, who's taking charge for him?" she asked.
Leo gave her a sidelong glance. "Why do you even care?"
"So, you don't know, you're just trapped by a man with a gun?" she mocked.
"How would I not know?!" Leo said, annoyed. "The aristocrats of Amijin have a full-fledged suite of retainers. The aristocratic culture of Amijin has zero tolerance for betrayal. Their closest retainers and inner loyalists are said to advance and retreat, live and die together. It seems his brothers are still reliable, since the only reason Duke Kline is still breathing is thanks to their virtue. It's that bastard, his aide, who's in power, of course!"
"Is that the one I met?" Han Yanyan asked, "When will he be back?"
"What are you up to?" Leo asked, immediately alert.
"I want to know how much time he's willing to let me rest," she said without changing her expression.
"Han Yanyan, do you think I'm a fool? My IQ is a hundred times yours!" Leo said mercilessly. "If you're thinking of bypassing me and bargaining with him directly, stop dreaming!"
She had been seen through. "You're thinking too much."
Leo snorted in disbelief.
"Speaking of..." she said, changing the subject, "With such a high level of technology and such an advanced civilization, why is there still a country ruled by a monarchy? It's unbelievable."
"What's so unbelievable about it? Any higher civilization must be a martial one. Those who aren't will be wiped out by those who are while in the process of development, so they never develop into higher civilizations. And those who are martial..."

"...Are always ambitious," Han Yanyan finished. She had once been the Matriarch of the Han family, carefully groomed by Han Jùn/Tang Kè, so she understood 'ambition' very well.
"Of course. What man doesn't have ambition?" Leo said. "Thousands of years ago, the Amijin Republic was under a group of aristocratic families and was just a state of the Interstellar Federation. Back then the interracial war with the Insect ClanOtherwise translated as the Zerg, but I thought that might ruin the immersion :P had just ended. The entirety of the human territories were in chaos, and all political forces were reshuffling. If I'd been Ares, I wouldn't have let this opportunity slip through my fingers either. I'd definitely have jumped at my chance and risen to the top."
"And how can a person standing at the top be willing to let go of their power? He would only wish for his power to continue, to be passed on from his hands to his sons, and from his sons to his grandsons, down from generation to generation. And the only way to achieve intergenerational power transfer of this sort..." Han Yanyan sighed, "Is the imperial system."
"Was this Emperor Ares so amazing?" she asked.
"Of course Emperor Ares was amazing. Who dares to say that he wasn't? But his descendants were only great for a few generations. Nowadays the Amijin aristocrats, and especially the royal family, are corrupt as hell. Their empire is chock-full of uprisings and revolutions," Leo said. "But if you ask me, the craziest one of the current lot is Duke Kline. That motherfucker is part of the fucking imperial family, yet still wants to overthrow the monarchy? What a nut!"
Han Yanyan glanced at him.
"What's that look in your eye mean?" Leo demanded.
She turned her head away and said, "Boring."
"Han Yanyan!" Leo called her, using her full name, "Don't think I don't know what you are thinking."
"Let me tell you this, Duke Kline is the seventh heir to the Amijin Empire. At that rank, he basically has no chance of ever being the emperor in this life. Him trying so hard to overthrow his own family is a power struggle! A fight for position!"
"Do you think he's some cute little warrior for democracy? Don't be naive! A man so entrenched in the current system, born with a golden spoon in his mouth, would never really worry about fighting for the common people!"
"If you're thinking of him as some sort of hero and hoping for him to rescue you, give up!"
"He's already so difficult to deal with. Setting aside whether he'll survive - not every dead person resurrects, plenty of them fail," Leo scoffed, "Even if he succeeds in awakening and resurrecting, do you think he'll remember you?"
Han Yanyan's gaze shot toward him. "What do you mean by that?"
Leo was in a very cheerful mood. "No matter how tangled up and loving you and he are in the simulation," he taunted, "It stays in the simulation. What you're coming into contact with inside of the simulation is the consciousness within his spiritual source. This doesn't even count as a subconscious, we call it 'residual consciousness'. If he comes back to life, it'll be his surface-level consciousness that will direct his life of eating and shitting. Simply put, the moment he awakens, he will no longer remember you."
Han Yanyan was hit hard. Her lips trembled slightly, as if she was holding back her tears. She turned her head away. After a while, she turned back, her expression much calmer but her eyes faintly sad.
"So this is the rest of my life?" she asked. "With not a single person to remember me?"
