Chapter 8: Chapter 8: The Midnight Enlistment Exam Part 1

"So, this is the place huh"

Deus glanced at his phone to confirm the location. "Looks to be the right location," Deus said, as took notice of the emerging crowd that began to surround the area. Standing before them was an industrial warehouse.

"It's a bit run down, don't you think," a man said amongst the crowd

"A little run down doesn't begin to describe this." Deus thought, as his eyes focused on the building, as he took notice of the rust that coated the exterior of the building and the flickering lights that brightened the area.

Deus sighed deeply;his mind went to the night before. 

[At Scarlet House]

 "So, you're going to accept my offer" Scarlet glanced at Deus, who held his head down low. "Yes" Scarlet expression shifted to excitement, as she rushed over to Deus.

 She embraced Deus in a tight hug "That my boy, I know you would change your mind" she said while ruffling his hair.

"Alright, can you let me go now?" Deus managed to mutter, as he felt the life get suck out of him from her bear hug. Just then Scarlet smelled a scent of smoke, as she let go of Deus and quickly made her way towards the kitchen.

 "Dang! I completely forgotten the meat loaf I was cooking" She glanced back at Deus, who was on the floor gasping for air. " How about we go out to eat to celebrate?" Scarlet said as she smiled at Deus

[Dexter's Dinner]

"So, what made you change your mind?" Scarlet glanced at Deus, who was already drinking his vanilla milkshake. Placing his hand on his face; he stared out of the window looking at night sky. "I guess, just didn't want to have any regrets"

"So, that's the reason you're going with" Scarlet pointed one of her fries at Deus. "I know what happened on the subway mister" Deus was taken aback by her statement. 

 "Wait! How you did you hear about that?" Deus replied anxiously, as his face turned red from embarrassment.

"Don't be thinking because you saved citizens on the train, you're a hero"

Deus slammed the table "But that wasn't what I was think..." But before he could finish his sentence, Scarlet cut him off.

 "Look kid, I want you to know what you did was dangerous. You could have gotten many people killed not to mention yourself hurt. Even if you have power, you can't be taking the law into your own hands understand"

"Yes ma'am" Scarlet sighed as she saw the look at Deus disgruntle face. "Deus, if you're going to become a hero. Do it the right way okay, no matter what happens or hardship you endure always remember what I teach you" 

The weight of her words impacted Deus. Although he was used to many lectures and speeches; this one felt different. It wasn't a scolding for his behavior or speech about his future. It was encouragement, from the one person who believed in him.

 With that realization he smiled. "Yes Ma'am" At that moment he vowed to make her proud.

"It's time" Deus thought, as he and the crowd made their way into the warehouse. 

The layout of the building was unlike what anyone expected, instead of being filled with mountains of boxes and supplies. The place looked completely empty and somewhat clean. 

There waiting for them was Michelle Pride, she wore a black and white suit and covered her face with a mask. Her hair was dressed in a ponytail.

"Welcome everyone! Allow me to introduce myself my name is Michelle Pride or as you know me by my hero name Ms. Pride. I am the instructor and overseer of this exam"

"I think I heard of her before" Deus felt a hand on his shoulder, as he glanced behind his back. 

He saw a handsome man with curly green hair. He wore a dark blue stripped sweater and had a chain wrapped around his neck. He had sharp and distinct purple eyes 

"Her name is Ms. Pride, you probably heard during the Fresco Incident a few months ago. Though she's most known for her attractive looks; she's a highly ranked A-Class Hero and Esper."

Deus brushed the man hand off him, "And I take you are" Deus shot him a fierce glance, as the man looked confused by his statement.

 "Dang, that hurts Deus. You really have forgotten me." Deus was confused, the man clearly knew him, but he couldn't ever remember meeting the man. 

At that moment he thought back to his time at the Academy, Deus took notice of his feature "green hair, a chain..." he mutters to himself.

Deus's face brightened, as he finally recognized the man, "Alister, Alister Wade."

"Took you long enough to remember, how have you been man," Alister said, as he placed his hand on Deus neck and smiled. 

Deus remembered Alister, during his time at the academy. The two of them were fated rivals of a sort, as he was the only person to best Deus even when he was a rank S Esper. But despite that fact, the two respected each other and Deus looked up to the man.

"Oh! have been good. What about you playboy?"

"Huh! Who you're calling a playboy?" Alister said as he looked back in confusion. 

"Oh, that's right you're still a virgin, so you can't classify as one. My mistake." Deus said jokingly, as he began to laugh. 

Alister's face turned bitter, as he bit his lips in frustration. "Look like you haven't changed much, huh"

"On the contrary, have vastly matured."Deus shot back, as he waved his finger in the air.

 "Matured my ass! You still act like a toddler." Just then the two were interrupted by an aura blast that shot between them stopping them in their tracks, as the two looked back to see the culprit. It was none other than Ms. Pride. 

"That's enough unless you want to be disqualified from the exam"she said, as she glared at them. The two now stood in silence, as she continued.

"Good, now let's get back on topic. Espers will be split into three different groups, Alpha, Beta, And Gamma. There you and your fellow group will compete in a number of tests. If you succeed in these tests, then you be accepted."

Pride noticed a hand rose amongst the crowd, as she looked at the person in question.

 The girl name was Ellie Cox, she had short auburn hair and wore a multi-colored sweater. She had droopy amber eyes, and her eyes were coated in black almost as if she hadn't slept in weeks. She also wore googles on her head as an accessory.

"Yes, do you have a question?"

"Will we be separated into groups based on our class" The crowd attention turned to Ms. Pride, as they faithful awaited her answer. Though everyone already knew the answer. It was an no brainer that they be separated, as it would be unfair to have lower-class espers in the same group as higher.

"No, you be separated randomly" Pride said, as her words sparked chatter amongst the crowd.

"What that's crazy talk!"

"Are you out of your mind!"

"This is rigged, you only want the A and B class Esper "

Pride disregarded the crowd chatter, ignoring their opinions as if they were never spoken.

"We aren't just looking for standard heroes, we are looking for heroes to lead a new generation. I expect you all came here you believed you can become that hero. So, proves it to us, show us your worth and that you deserve to be here. Can you do that?"

"Yes" The Crowd yelled in thunderous voice. Her words fueled the crowd with newfound motivation, in particular Deus felt a sudden heat overcome his chest. It was painful that he couldn't restrain it. A smile appeared on his face and his eyes lit up with excitement.

"THEN, WELCOME TO THE MIDNIGHT ENLSITMENT EXAM"
