The smell of something cooking picked on my nostrils as I closed the distance between myself and the small hut. It was located right in the corner of the L-junction of the dark alleyway.

The closer I walked towards it, the stronger the delicious scent struck my nose. I was almost charmed by the smell alone without knowing what kind of dish the tattered hut’s inhabitants were making.

Once I got close enough, faint cries of, perhaps, two children entered my ears. Judging from their high-pitched voice, they must be around 4 or 5 years old. They were yelling and crying at the same time. And again, my chest tightened for a reason I didn’t even know why.

“Just wait a little bit, kids. The soup will be done soon.”

Amidst the loud, shrieking cries of the children, a gentle voice of a woman arose. She seemed to be calming her children down. Feeling quite curious, I dared myself to peek at them through the small hole on the walls.

What I saw was enough to make me contemplate my decision. A young woman around the age of 20 or a little bit older was caressing the backs of the two children which appeared to be twins. One was a boy, and the other one was a girl. They all wore better clothes than me, albeit being slightly dirty and having small holes in some parts.

The mother swiftly took out 2 small wooden bowls and served the soup to the children. She then pulled something out of her pocket; a stale looking hard bread. After dividing it into two, she gave it to her children and said while smiling warmly, “There it is, kids. Now stop crying and enjoy your food, okay?”

The twins’ cry was quickly replaced with huge grins across their faces as they happily gobbled the bread while sipping the warm soup from time to time.

“Now, now, eat more slowly, will you?” The young mother lovingly uttered as she poured the soup for herself.

Let’s not… disturb them.

In my era, poverty was also a cancerous problem. It was all worsened by the existence of the corrupt nobilities and royals; squeezing the poor dry by imposing high rate taxes, while those in power were living lavishly in mansions.

At that time, I had to force my way through the brains of the country by exacting such cruel massacre to free my subjects-to-be. But now, I had no power in doing so.

No, I still had the power, not the will. I had decided to live as a normal person, albeit the bare starting line still seemed out of my reach any time now.

I slowly retracted myself from there and headed to an even deeper place, or at least that’s what I planned. Just right after I was about to leave those three alone, I could hear footsteps coming from the deeper place I had just set my aim at.

Falling into a panic, I quickly forced my weak body to move. Luckily, there was a pile of broken barrels near the small hut. Without thinking twice, I jumped there and hid myself beneath it. Yes, I was hiding, again.

… I really need to fix this body’s cowardly tendency, it seems.

Vaguely, two different voices of men were heard, and I, undoubtedly, recognized one of them. When their figures were finally out in the open, my eyes widened as a result. A sense of insecurity rushed up to my heart, but I braced myself to keep watching.

“What took them so long? Is tying up a small girl that hard for those fucks?” muttered the man with the long beard.

“... Maybe something happened.”

“Screw your bad premonition shit, Pablo. It ain’t making sense at all.”

“... Sorry.”

Pablo, yes, I knew that name. I also recognized him among the 5 men who had surrounded me. He was one of the two leaving me in the ‘care’ of the three dirty men. However, I had never seen that bearded man before. Not that I really cared anyway…

Those two men stopped right by the hut’s door while continuing their conversation. A moment later, the door was knocked three times by the beardy and the young mother opened it with a wide smile on her face. Intrigued, I kept my eyes on them.

“Oh, you’re back early, dear. And hello there, Pablo. Still looking gloomy, aren’t you?”

The young mother greeted them in friendly terms, especially the beardy who seemed to undeniably be her husband. The beardy hugged the woman and before long, the twins were also flocking around his feet.

It was complicated. My feelings, I meant. Part of me felt so warm seeing a small family bonding together like that. But another part, which most likely was much, much stronger, wanted to slit the beardy’s and, especially, the man named Pablo’s throat after putting me in such a predicament.

I had almost lost my freedom just right after coming back to life, and that alone should be sufficient enough for me to stand against them. That should have been the best course of action I could take, but something deep within me— within my body, was preventing me from exacting what had to be done.

It was as if I got forced to do something I didn’t really want to and it sucked. I knew my survival was at stake just by hiding myself like this since it was just a matter of time until those men found me, but my body just froze up in place, petrified out of pity on these lowly organisms.

This won’t do… I must kill them before they could kill me.

Life was hard, and I was now experiencing it firsthand. Between this bodily defect and my own volition, I had to choose one. And I went with the latter. But before that, I must take precautions of some sort.

I was hungry as hell, and would probably faint if I challenged them head on. Silently, I started focusing on my body and closed my eyes while keeping my ears up for their conversation.

“So, you’re still working, dear?” asked the woman while clinging onto the beardy’s arm flirtatiously.

“Well, something unexpected happened. Don’t worry, I’ll be back when morning comes. And you kids, don’t trouble your mother. I’ll bring more food after this.”

“Yeeeeeees!”

Truly, if it were just me watching some kind of late night TV drama, I would be smiling from ear to ear while eating popcorn to all these wholesome scenes. However, this was reality. Those men would be troublesome if I didn’t deal with them when the chance arose…

TV drama? Popcorn? Wholesome? The heck are those?

As soon as the beardy and Pablo walked away from that place, the woman and her kids seemingly returned to their hut. That also gave me time to prepare a sneak attack from behind. Slowly, I opened my eyes and stood up with my magic ready in hands.

I planned on striking them from behind unnoticed, and that should be much easier than exerting enormous amounts of mana like before. Not to mention the frostburn in my fingers was still lingering and I didn’t think it would be gone any time soon.

I inhaled deeply as I compelled my hands to point at the men’s back. This time, I wasn’t going to use ice magic. It would be troublesome if the surroundings were to freeze again.

Calmly, I pictured the image of small fireballs as I focused on my palms. A moment later, 2 floating, fiery tiny suns appeared beside me. They were emitting radiances that lit up the place I was standing at, but not too much. The heat made contact with my skin, and I thought it would be a shame to shoot these precious sources of heat and energy. However, I had to do what must be done.

This body’s a defect, yet the talents it possesses are sure top notch.

I concentrated and precisely aimed the fireballs at the men’s head, trying to kill them instantly without them knowing. I was trying to blow their heads off with as little effort as possible. The fireballs were shot smoothly until…

“Mom, look! That big sister is a witch!”

“... Eh?”

I could only let out an idiotic sound as I turned my head at the source of that voice and immediately spotted one of the twins was looking at me with sparkling eyes. Incidentally, I lost control of the fireballs as they, obviously, changed their trajectory to target the kid.

No, no, no, no, no, no., no, no, no no no no no! This is not what I wanted!

I tried to intercept the fireballs but to no avail; they were too fast for my small and skinny legs. I even stumbled on the pile of barrels and face-planted on the ground in front of me, completely losing sight of the fireballs I had shot from my two hands. A moment passed and a shrill shriek of a woman followed by a loud explosion sound entered my ears.

“No!”

With a heavy heart, I was trying to raise my face that should be so full of mud and dirt now. I could even taste the pungent sensation of rocky soil in my mouth, along with its grainy aftertaste. When my blurry sight gradually sharpened, I spotted a lump of object still burning ablaze where the little kid had stood before.
