Now I’ve done it… I killed someone not deserving… Again?
My gaze was fixated on the burning object as the guilt of murdering someone innocent crept inside my heart at a fast pace. I knew this feeling. I had done this in the past as well. Wait, or have I? I was petrified, not out of fear but remorse yet nothing could escape from my lips.
A moment later, the fire died down. I almost hurled at the thought that I would be seeing a grotesque scenery of a burnt lifeless dead body, but I didn’t. Why? There was no child there. Or I should probably change my phrasing. The child was there, and he was perfectly unscathed.
However, just directly between me and the child, a big shield made of stone was standing still proudly until it slowly crumbled alongside its burnt part.
Perhaps I was just too absent-minded, or just too hungry to quickly comprehend and understand that the shield was the one getting set to fire, not the child. I felt a little bit relieved when I realized that, at least for now.
I was still in the middle of processing the whole ordeal before me and suddenly, a heavy gust of wind blew strongly as a mysterious object fell from the sky and landed right in front of my face.
The object was a little bit taller than me, had four perfect limbs identified as a pair of well-toned legs and slender arms. It was dressed in some kind of a bright red military uniform with many decorative accessories here and there, plus, a frilly skirt and knee-highs. It also had glistening brown pigtailed hair… It was just a girl that fell from the sky.
“What a messy scene,” uttered the girl after turning her body to face me, revealing her breathtaking appearance. She then pointed her long, thin sword at my eyes and accused, “To even reduce the Aegishjalmur into that kind of state… Lady Skuld was correct about you.”
… Eh? What? Huh? What is this girl talking about?
It all happened so fast I couldn’t even breathe properly. I got careless and accidentally aimed my magic at an innocent child. Now a random girl who fell from the sky was trying to accuse me for something I didn’t even know what or which. What is actually happening now!?
“... No response? Or perhaps you don’t understand what I’m saying?”
I quickly shook my head to show that I understood her language. But the content of her words, I had not the slightest idea of it.
The girl furrowed her eyebrows as her bright purple pupils locked in my eyes. She looked dubious for a moment, and quickly changed her complexion after she seemingly got the idea as to why I hadn’t responded to her a moment ago. She clapped her hands before opening her mouth in a monotonous manner.
“Ah, I see. It’s not like you don’t know what I’m saying. You don’t understand what I am trying to convey. I feel enlightened. Yes.”
I quickly nodded my head, showing my full agreement on her statement. I almost replied to her but was a moment late as her lips were already moving to form words again.
“Anyway, let’s cease our random talk. We’ll have our time in the world when we get out of this place.” The girl offered her hand to help me stand. Frantically, I grabbed it and couldn’t help but savor the— Ahem! I couldn’t help but admire how soft it was. So this is how a maiden’s palm feels like?
After fixing my posture, I tried to get a better look at the girl in front of me, observing her attitude and demeanor. She wasn’t that taller compared to me, yet her aura felt so different. I wasn’t sure that it was because of my biased nature, but I kind of knew that we would get along in the future.
Oh, what are you thinking, Elise?
I didn’t realize I was staring at her the whole time as she backed away from me and said, “Your gaze is so uncomfortable. You swing that way? Sorry, but I have no plans for romance.” She then pulled me out of the pile of barrels and added, “... not until I find the right partner.”
At that time, I still didn’t know what she meant by that. And to be honest, we didn’t get the chance to even talk to each other properly after that. The two men from before, who are they again? The beardy and… Pab… Pablo? Yes! Pablo! They were running towards us and brandished their cheap looking swords.
The beardy was still as scary as before and he seemed quite restless after turning his head to his right, but Pablo… He flinched after looking at my way. Am I… really that scary?

“Y-You… Why are y—”
“You! You almost killed my son!” After pulling Pablo, the beardy yelled and pointed his sword at me, cutting Pablo’s unfinished words off.
Seriously? In a matter of mere minutes I got pointed at by swords twice? Twice! What is wrong with my luck today?
However, I… couldn’t say I didn’t understand what the beardy felt. If I were in his shoes, I would also do the same to my son’s murderer, if not even worse. But in this case, I almost killed his son, not I had killed his son. I shifted my gaze towards the child and saw that he was already embraced by the young mother, unscathed.
I was about to open my mouth to defend myself, but immediately stopped after sensing something terrible from the girl beside me who had been so silent this whole time.
I slowly glanced at her, and wow, her expression was that of a wounded lioness in its final struggle. She still kept her stunning beauty on, yet the rage and hatred from her purple eyes was too easy to tell apart. It was an expression I had never seen before; even my subjects had never shown this kind of hatred in front of me.
The girl probably knew I was glancing over her face and immediately took a deep breath. She seemed to be a little calmer now, but her terrible atmosphere was still as strong as before. It even sent chills down my spine. She then took another deep breath and softly muttered, “Don’t worry. I got this.”
Just right after saying that, she stepped forwards and brandished her thin sword elegantly. She made an offensive stance and I knew there was almost no flaw in it. Not only that, the way she handled the sword was utterly beautiful and refined.
As she swung it once to the front, her sword was gleaming in silver light and somehow, the light was quite familiar to my eyes. Where have I seen that before?
“Níðhǫggr, grant me your blessing.” whispered the girl as she brought her legs together and placed her free hand behind her waist, making such a beautiful stance that emitted dignity and authority from those possessing the strength. “Come. I’ll be your opponent.”
The girl taunted the beardy and Pablo. They looked at each other once and nodded, and Pablo dashed towards the girl at a tremendous speed. I was startled by the fact that, albeit looking so gloomy, the man named Pablo was definitely talented in using his sword.
But what made me gape my mouth open wasn’t that.
The girl calmly blocked Pablo’s raging attacks as sparks ejected from where the two swords collided every time. Not even a single bead of sweat was seen on the girl. And she, casually, turned her head to me and said, “Wait there. This will soon be over.”
Pablo’s face turned red in anger and charged on the girl wildly. However, the girl only snorted as she wore another nasty, horrifying expression on her face.
“You took the bait. Foolish.”
The girl only slashed once, but the shockwave it caused was so tremendous as it launched strong breezes all over the place. One of the breezes touched my face and my mouth was forced to open. I could even feel my teeth drying up as a result. Just how strong is this girl, really?
There was no sound of metallic objects clashing into each other like before. Instead, the sound of bony meat being sliced picked on my eardrums. Along with that, fresh red liquid sprayed from the girl’s sword as a round object was floating mid-air. It was in slow-motion to my eyes, and I immediately knew the fight was already over.
With a thud, the round object fell to the ground and rolled towards the girl’s ankle. It was Pablo’s severed head.
I was completely enthralled by the elegance of her swordsmanship until the beardy’s shriek pulled me back to reality.
“Hiiiiiiiiieeeeeekk!!!”
Proudly, the girl puffed out her chest that was… tsk… much bigger than mine and swung her sword to the side to rid the bloodstain of it. In front of her, accompanied by the head near her ankles, the body of the man named Pablo was lying there lifelessly. And not far from it, the beardy was crawling backwards and pissing himself while making an extremely terrified expression.
The girl, on the other hand, plunged her sword into the ground and announced, “Justice has been served. One Yggrasil’s spawn has been dealt with accordingly. Requesting permission to collect the seed.”
