Chapter 20: Arch Mage Merle and her protégé

Merle POV

I never thought I would be back here at the Royal Academy and as a professor no less. 

Well, at least I have been able to progress my research and at a very fast rate too. This was only possible with the academy's support. I guess that is a perk of being back here, not that it helps my current situation...

"Principal, It's Melissa Harleshide your vice principal."

" Oh come in and have a seat, Vice principal."

" Thank you Madam Principal."

"Now what do you want to talk about?"

" I wanted to inform you that a representative of the church will be coming today afternoon for the inspection."

" Oh, Thank you for informing me. Is there anything else?"

"... No not officially but I do have some queries regarding..."

"Are you still mad about my appointment to principal?"

"It is not like that at all. You are clearly an amazing mage far beyond our years it's just..."

"It's just what?"

"Forgive my imprudence but... you just don't seem to have the school's best interest at heart."

"Here we go again, Now what have I done? Why do you think so?"

"Well...For the past two years ever since you became the principal, the school just... It isn't what it used to be.

"We have already done this dance Vice principal. I understand you feel like I have trampled all over your hard work by taking over as the principal but the circumstance required me to. It is not like I enjoy this myself. I would rather enjoy delving into my work and indulge my sloth but unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of doing that."

" That is very interesting Madam Principal... So why is your Protégé Ivan taking over your lectures? He is barely 12 years..."

"And why should that be an issue?"

"I mean he is twelve years old, don't you think he is too young?"

"Does age really matter?'

"...I mean it does when it is your lectures that he is teaching"

"So what if he is 12 years old, I have delegated my teaching duties to him because I believe he is fit for the job. Don't you think so too vice principal"

"I do agree that he is a prodigy when it comes to magic but that doesn't mean he is a good substitute for a mage of your calibre"

"What makes you think so?... Please don't tell me that he is still not mature enough."

"But..."

"Vice principal, since you are so insistent on this matter I would like to ask you if you know of a very young professor from 15 years ago?"

"I don't think I do?"

"Have you not heard of any rumours?"

"I have but I don't believe in them and why should I, I was a professor of the academy during that period and have never met this student-professor."

"Then explain how silent casting was introduced."

"Silent casting?... Oh, you mean that military-grade magic only exclusive to a certain portion of the kingdom's population."

"Yes."

"I thought you were the one who invented it?"

"Well, I thought that too only to find out it was already public knowledge."

"...If I may ask how is this related to Ivan?"

"I am glad you ask. I believe that the 12-year-old from the rumour is the one who introduced silent casting to this academy. Using that as a reference point I think Ivan is allowed to teach the students."

"But..."

"This discussion is over vice principal."

"...As you wish Madam Principal, I will now take my leave. But before I do I would like you to remember this academy is not only supposed to engage in magic activities, the art of physical combat is also within its jurisdiction."

"Thank you, vice principal, I will do well to remember that."

Silent casting...I may have invented the technique but I don't think I did it alone. Sometimes it feels like there is someone very important missing in my life and when I try to remember all goes blank. Maybe this person is the one from the rumours, the one who created this technique same to me. Well, it doesn't matter I have other things to take care of now and since this matter is not of the utmost urgency I will revisit it at a future time. Let me get ready for this so-called 'inspection'. I know the inspection is a cover-up for what the church truly wants to come and check on but my hands are tied here. I miss the times when Politics was not a part of my life.

(Knock  knock)

"Come in... Oh it's you Ivan, have a seat."

"Thank you, Master."

"Now what can I do for you today? Is there perhaps a problem with your magic engineering lectures?"

"No nothing like that at all. It's just that you have been very busy these days we rarely meet."

"Sorry about that, I am just a little preoccupied with something."

" ...It- It is something for the church isn't it?"

"..."

"I knew it, they are forcing your hands again...Why are you letting them do this to you? You are one of the strongest and most talented mage I have ever met and you..."

"That is not good enough Miss Merle or are you not motivated enough."

"You think this is a matter of motivation!!!..."

"Whoa calm yourself archmage."

"...I am, I am working on a substitute for those expensive elemental shards. Once I have that, you will have your weapons ready for your war."

"True elemental shards are quite expensive, 500 gold for 4 is quite a steep price. 

That's good to hear. Don't just make us wait too long or you will end up responsible for the loss of our great sage your father."

"Is that all Mr inspector, No I still need to see your magic curriculum."

"Are you serious? ...Ok here is the ledger containing our curriculum."

"If that is all you can show yourself out Mr Inspector."
