Chapter 17: Deep Slumber

Outside the training hall,

All the first-year students and Instructors were watching the battle unfold in the projection. 

Some second-year and third-year students also joined to watch the projection when they saw a commotion outside the training hall.

They watched the battle and couldn't help but investigate more about the group who were fighting a rank 06 beast.

Most of them tasked their subordinates to investigate this strange group. Some of them asked a student from the crowd

"Hey! Who are the people in the projection?"

They purposefully showed him their status cards which indicated that they were second years.

The boy first was annoyed by the fact that someone had interrupted him from watching the battle but after seeing the status cards he quickly changed his tone and said " They are first years. They are known as the Famous Five."

When they heard the term 'Famous Five', they immediately understood who the group was.

They had heard that five kids of noble families had acquired powerful and strange innate abilities. Furthermore, they were childhood friends. One of them had acquired the Space ability while the another had acquired the Mist ability.

The second and third-year students narrowed their eyes and looked at the projection.

Among the crowd, Abel and his subordinates were attentively watching the projection. Abel grinned when he saw 100,000 Scorched Ravens surround Darell. He thought Darell would be injured but when he saw Darell butcher the Ravens without breaking any sweat, he gritted his teeth in rage.

Athena, Lin, Walter, and the other Instructors were watching the projection with serious expressions. They were ready to intervene if the battle turned worse.

As the battle went on, the students and the Instructors'  jaws dropped. When Darell hit the fireball from the Scorched Raven General, everyone held their breaths. 

Abel was hoping that Darell would be blasted away but when he saw Darell standing still after the impact of the explosion he cursed him under his breath and walked away from the projection while gesturing for his subordinates to follow him.

The silver-haired girl was also watching the projection. She saw Darell after the dust cleared and narrowed her eyes. She silently walked away from the crowd without anybody noticing her.

Inside the training hall,

"DARELL!" 

Emma shouted when she saw Darell collapse on the ground. Emma, Lilith, Eric, and Ariel ran toward Darell who was lying on the ground.

"NO!"

Emma shrieked in horror when she saw Darell. Lilith's face instantly paled as she stood there lifelessly. Eric's eyes were trembling when he saw Darell. Ariel covered her eyes and mouth to prevent herself from throwing up. 

Tears streamed down Emma's eyes as she collapsed to her knees. She bawled her eyes out as she held the unconscious Darell.

Half of Darell's face was completely charred and only flesh remained. Both of his arms were completely charred and the bones of his fingers and arms were only seen. No clothes remained on his body. His whole upper body was burnt to a crisp. Both of his legs were broken and twisted in the wrong direction.

Emma cried and cried and cried. She cried her heart out until her eyes were red and puffy.

"Please wake up, Darell. 

 Please wake up.

 Lilith needs you.

 Eric needs you. 

 Ariel needs you.

 I need you. 

 So, please wake up."

But, Darell didn't open his eyes and remained unconscious.

Emma held his face and said "This was meant to be training. Why? Why did you have to push yourself so much? Why are you pushing yourself so much? What are you afraid of?"

The surrounding environment broke down like shattered glass as the spell was deactivated.

Athena, Lin, Walter, and the other Instructors ran inside the training hall. Athena quickly covered Darell in Ice and glanced at the rest of them. She sighed helplessly and said, " You are all exempt from the classes until further orders."

She used her Wind skill to pick up Darell and ordered" Follow me. We have to go to the Medicine Hall as soon as possible."

Eric and Ariel nodded. Eric then shook Lilith and repeated Athena's orders. Lilith snapped out of the trance and nodded.

Ariel helped Emma to her feet and silently followed everybody to the Medicine Hall. She knew Emma wasn't in her senses so she refrained from saying anything.

When they arrived outside of the training hall, all of the students had gathered to see the group's faces. But, Athena cast a Fog skill which caused the students to see nothing. The other Instructors barked out orders and dispersed the students.

They arrived at the Medicine Hall where Athena removed Darell from the statue and placed him on one of the beds.

An Instructor specializing in healing skills came forward and scanned Darell's body.

All of their gazes were on the Instructor who was scanning Darell's body.

The Instructor had a grim expression on her face as she finished scanning his body.

She sighed and said "He has used up all of his mana. His body is devoid of any mana and he has fallen into a deep slumber due to it."

When Emma heard her, she struggled to stand but Ariel held onto her. 

Lilith asked the Instructor " When will he wake up?"

She had a complicated expression on her face. She sighed in dejection and answered Lilith.

"I don't know. It depends on the person. Some wake up instantly whereas some don't wake up for many years."

She noticed the downcast expression Lilith had on her face and pitied her.

She said "But, it depends on the person. If he wants to live, he will fight back to wake up from his deep slumber."

Emma's face brightened and she said "That's right. Darell will wake up. He has to wake up. He wants to accomplish so many things. He doesn't want to die now."

Lilith, Eric, and Ariel looked at Emma and nodded their heads. They believed her words and thought the same.

Meanwhile, the Instructors thought that Emma held onto false hope. But, they didn't want to break that false hope.

They left the group and exited the Medicine Hall. 

Emma and Lilith sat on either side of Darell and held his hand.

Eric and Ariel sat down on the chairs and waited for Darell to wake up.

They fell asleep waiting for Darell to wake up.

The next day, 

Ariel woke up and saw Emma and Lilith asleep while holding Darell's hand. She looked at her side and found no presence of Eric.

She sighed as she knew Eric was busy venting his frustrations.

She walked out of the Medicine Hall and looked back again. She sighed while clenching her fists. She walked towards the dorm room.

When she was walking toward the dorms, she heard a voice calling her from behind.

"Ariel!"
