11 "Destroy the Goblin Nest"

 

After receiving the request, we boarded the carriage that Doros had arranged.

Although Doros and Pyxis are rank E, they seem to have a lot of experience as members. The arrangements for the carriage were done skillfully, and the negotiations with the servants seemed practiced.

After a few minutes had passed since we left the capital, while I was watching the scenery from the carriage, Aina spoke to me.

"Aina, huh. What is it?"

"Why Nown?"

It was a question that lacked words, but I understood the meaning.

She wanted to know why I was using the alias Nown.

"......Because I can't use my abilities as a human. I registered with the guild under that name because it would've caused some troubled if I used my real name."

"If that was the case, you should have become my subordinate."

It's not something that I could ask someone I just met. Although the Tenmei Brigade accepts registrations with aliases, that doesn't mean it's something that should be allowed. I and Crenna are only using aliases because we have no other choice.

Besides, I can't tell her Crenna's story. If I do, she might become a target.

"......I'll ask next time."

"I…yes. I'll do it."

I gave her a vague answer, and she nodded strongly.

"Hey, can I ask you something?"

Crenna spoke to Aina while looking intently at me.

"You seem to know Nown-kun, are you sure you're not mistaken? Did you turn him into a beastman?." 　Crenna asked in a hushed voice so that Dross and Pyxis at the front of the carriage could not hear.

Although I am currently her subordinate, that is only for the duration of me being her bodyguard. After that, I am free to do as I please.

"That would be troublesome." Aina said in her usual inorganic way.

"For now, you can do as you please. But I would like you to come to me in the end."

I felt a little uneasy. Crenna also widened her eyes and tensed up.

"Don't worry. I'll treat you with the utmost respect. I'll also prepare ten mistress."

"M-My lady!? What do you mean by that!?"

The sudden use of an unfamiliar term threw her into a panic.

The party dismounts from the carriage and looks up at the steep mountain nearby. They have gathered all the information they need about goblin nests from the guild's request forms, and according to the information, the nest seems to be located in a cave at the foot of the mountain.

There are a few goblins keeping watch around the entrance to the cave, and when the party counts, there are more than 20.

"It looks like there are a lot of them watching... probably more than just a few sentries." Crenna says.

"But we can't go in because I can smell Hobgoblins from inside the cave." 

Aina says.

"Hobgoblins? What are they?"

"Hobgoblins are a type of goblin, they are bigger and stronger than regular goblins. They can easily break through the dirt to get out, and they can rebuild their nests quickly."

"I see. In that case, it might be better to kill all the hobgoblins, but if we do that, we'll have to deal with the goblins outside too. It would be better to avoid a crossfire, but......"

"If it's a small group, we can sneak them into the cave without being noticed by the guards." Aina says,

"If we can avoid being noticed by the guards, there's no need to worry about a crossfire."

"Even if there are only a few of us, who's going to go?" Doros asked.

"It's only natural that I, who is the strongest among us, go. And for rear security, I want another person."

Saying that, Aina looked at me. "Nown, please."

"...I understand."

I honestly don't have much confidence in fighting Hobgoblins. However, if I use the power of the vampire, I should be able to help.

But when I agreed, Crenna had a worried expression.

"W-will it be alright if just the two of us go? Maybe I help out too--"

"No, the characteristic of the vampire race is that it is versatile. If we split up into two groups, it would be better for each person to have one member." Pyxis calmly said.

"We will leave the extermination of Hobgoblins to Aina-san and Nown-san. The three of us will help prepare to cause a landslide."

"Preparation...what do you mean specifically?"

"We will break the ground and make it unstable. If we need more ground, we will get it from somewhere else. Doros will be useful for this task."

"Alright." Doros confidently replied. "My ability is [Strength]. I can do heavy labor."

Strength is, as the name suggests, the power to temporarily strengthen the target.

Usually, the target has the word "strength" at the end of its name. Arm strength, leg strength, and physical strength combined, but there are also variations like mental strength, visual strength, and even attractiveness and learning ability.

The plan is decided.

We will carry out the plan in an hour, even though it is going to rain. If we wait until it rains, the soil will get wet. We should move now, while we still can.

However, if we can take down Hobgoblin early on, they might not notice the disturbance and come out of their nest before the landslide happens. I tried to tell them that, but Hobgoblin's smell is too strong for Aina to sense from a distance. The Hobgoblin's nest is said to be quite large, so it might be a good opportunity to move in now.

"Let's go."

As soon as Pyxis gave the signal, everyone split up into two groups.

Just before we split up, Crena and I called out to each other.

"Be careful, Nown!"

"You too, Ann!"
