The girls were hurting, I tried my best to do all I could to ease their pain, both physical and emotional. Despite my best attempts Josie, she left us alone, needing to sort things out on her own. So I felt it was time to finally ask Shana the question that had been hanging on my mind since we first met. “Tell me love, to what familiar does the black revolver belong?”

Her eyes got narrow, her pupils dilated, and I could sense panic began to consume her mind. As I held her hand tight, I could feel her pulse quicken. Her heartbeat was as loud as a pounding drum, thump thump thump thump. I thought to fill her with pleasure, to help ease the mental stress that my question brought on, but then thought better to further invade her than I have already.

“Calm yourself darling,” I whispered to her softly, stroking her hand with my thumb, “if you are not ready then you do not have to speak of this.” I felt a sense of guilt, only hours after the tragedy I had inquired into a deep and personal matter. Though, from her reaction alone, I had come to the conclusion of what I suspected all along. The answer to why she would not consummate with her familiar, an answer she would have to give on her own time, one I had no right to force from her.

“Lady Kara!” Dario burst through the door, sweating and out of breath. His sudden emergence caught me off guard, I sprung upright covering my body with my blanket as if I had been caught in a compromising situation.

“Dario darling what is it? You are breathless love.”

“We found her!” he said between gasps for air. “She is alive!”

“Found who darling?” I raised a brow.

“Look!” He stumbled over to me, and handed me a transcription of a telegraph.

I looked it over, and a wide smile spread across my face. It was from my church songbird, he had found the witch who bore the River familiar. She was in the second circle, alive, though not for long. My smile faded as I read further. Execution by hanging for crimes against the church! I leapt to my feet, regained my composure and turned to Shana, who sat in a stupor. “Shana love, I’m sorry but I must go and formulate a plan of action. When you are able, come to me in the throne room. I’m sorry to do this to you so soon after these recent events, but I have an urgent job for you.”

“Huh, oh sure....” she said, her mind still elsewhere.

I bit my lip, leaving her in this state pained my heart, as I was responsible for having brought her to this point. Still, it was of the utmost importance that we saved this witch. And so I left our room, and made for the throne room, where I would discuss with Vox a plan. I sent Dario to return word to my songbird, and tell him I’ll have my girls meet him on the train to the second circle by the next morning. “And after you have sent the message, call for Reli to meet me as well. Her powers may be necessary in this.” I won’t make the mistake of sending too few into a mission again. Other than Shana and Reli, I’d have to see just who is up to the task, make an open call to the others in the manor.

“My love, you seem excited almost,” Gentle said walking beside me, “is there good news you aren’t telling me?”

“He said the witch’s name is Naomi,” I answered her with a wide smile. Finally I have found you.
