Around one hour later, after they arrived at Vlad’s house, Adora’s left the room where Laura was sleeping after confirming that her condition had stabilized.

The blonde girl noticed that Vlad was reading a book in the living room and approached him.

“… Thank you.” She said awkwardly.

Vlad waved his hand indifferently. “It’s nothing. You don’t need to worry.”

“Even so, I need to thank you. Thank you for rescuing me, for saving Laura’s life, and for allowing us to stay here.”

Vlad raised his gaze from the book he was reading and stared straight into Adora’s green eyes.

After staring into her eyes for several seconds, he sighed.

“Laura was the one that found me and rescued me. It’s the least I can do.” Vlad spoke up before returning his gaze to the book. “You must be tired. Go take bath and rest. We will be busy tomorrow.”

Adora nodded and walked off.

Once Adora was gone, Vlad raised his face with a complicated expression.

“… I’m really a bastard.”

It was true that part of the reason he saved Laura was that she had saved his life before, but to be honest, that was only the smallest reason.

When Vlad decided to help Laura, his main motivation was to earn Adora's trust.

Based on the investigation she made about the man with the tattoo plus tonight's operation, Vlad had confirmed Adora’s ability and potential. For Vlad, who was alone and without allies, she was someone he wanted to pull to his side.

Thus, when he saw that Laura’s life was in danger, his first thought was not to help her, but how to use the situation to make Adora indebted to him.

And his plan succeeded.

Judging from Adora’s attitude just now, she was noticeably less hostile than before. Moreover, she was feeling grateful toward him, something that Vlad could use to manipulate her more easily.

“… Really, I’m a bastard.”

But he did not regret it.

To avenge his family, he did not mind becoming a demon, much less a bastard.

“It looks like I must pay more attention to Laura. Perhaps if I make her trust me completely, I can manipulate Adora through her.”

That did not seem hard. Vlad could feel Laura’s goodwill toward him. The sprouting of her naïve first love was something Vlad could use to make the youngest sister do his bidding.

Nevertheless, Vlad could not help but feel guilty when he thought about using the pure feelings of that innocent girl to achieve his goals.

“… I need to think more about it first.” With a soft sigh, Vlad went back to reading his book.

Around fifteen minutes later, Adora appeared again in the living room.

Her hair was wet after taking a bath, and she had changed her clothes for something more comfortable to wear.

Vlad could not help but find her beautiful. Even though Adora was slightly skinny due to her harsh living conditions, was wearing old and unfashionable clothes, and her skin showed slight traces of tan due to spending long hours working under the strong sunlight, something about her made her seem attractive.

Perhaps the strong will in her green eyes was what Vlad found beautiful.

However, he was not a man that thought with his lower body. After giving a quick glance to her, he continued reading his book.

He knew that Adora wanted to tell him something, but instead of asking, it was better to wait for her to take the initiative to talk. That would bring the best result.

After a couple of minutes of awkward silence, Adora finally opened her mouth.

“… Are you not going to ask about Laura’s illness?”

“I thought you told me to not thrust my nose into your affairs.” He spoke in an amused tone without moving his gaze from the book.

Adora hesitated briefly before shaking her head.

“… It doesn’t matter now.”

Vlad nodded and raised his gaze while closing the book and putting it on a table.

“Then let me ask you, what is Laura’s illness?”

“… It’s not exactly an illness but the aftermath from an incident that happened a couple of years ago.”

Vlad raised an eyebrow in interest.

“Do explain.”

“You know that Laura and I grow up in the slums, right?” She asked. “Life in the slums is not easy. You don’t know what you will eat the next day, or if someone will barge into your house to kill you or your loved ones. It’s a despairing place filled with the worst scum of society.

“I hate it. And I hate that Laura has to grow in that environment. So, since I was a child, I promised myself that I would take my sister out of there.

“One day, I found a manual to practice mana by chance. It was just the lowest-leveled manual, but it changed my life completely.

“I was blessed with talent. In just five months, I reached the peak of initiation and broke through to the bloodline awakening realm. Furthermore, I awakened a relatively powerful bloodline.

“My first thought then was that this was my opportunity to leave this place.”

“I had learned to steal since I was a child, but after that, stealing was much easier than before. I could easily get ten times as much money as before.

“I was overjoyed. I mean, fate seemed to smile at me for the first time. If I could continue getting that much money every day, I would need only a couple of years to get my sister out of the slums.

“I was naïve,” Adora said with a bitter smile. “It’s not that easy to leave the slums.”

“I had been careful to not get involved with the gangs. I knew that it was not easy to leave a gang after entering it.

“But although I did not want to get involved with them, the gangs thought differently.”

“One of the gangs noticed the unusual amount of money I earned and discovered that I had awakened a bloodline. In the slums, someone like that is very valuable, so after the leader of the gang heard about me, he coveted my abilities.

“He was just the leader of a small gang, even smaller than Crow’s gang, but someone like him is already very powerful in the slums.

“At first, he tried to invite me to join his gang amicably. But when I refused him several times, his attitude became harsher, until the point it was almost threatening.

“I should have known that scum like him would not mind the means to achieve his goals.” She said with an expression filled with loathing. “I was… so foolish.”

And the one that paid for my foolishness was Laura. Adora’s expression was filled with self-hatred when she said these words.

“One day, the leader of that gang decided it was time to teach me a lesson.

“While I was out in the city, he led his men to my house and kidnapped Laura.

“Then, he sent someone to tell me that if I did not agree to his request, he would kill her.

“That was the start of our tragedy.”
