Adora was skillful and talented. Someone like her could succeed anywhere as long as she had a bit of luck.

But she had a weakness.

Her sister.

Unlike Adora, Laura was small, weak, a bit clumsy, and someone that Adora needed to protect. Laura was the weakness of her talented sister.

And the slums didn’t allow weaknesses.

“They kidnapped Laura. The leader of the gang locked her up in a house with the gang members keeping watch on her and threatened to kill her if I did not follow her orders.” Adora explained with a self-deprecating tone. “It was my fault. I should have seen it come. However, I was naïve, and Laura paid for it.”

“So you agreed,” Vlad sighed.

“What else could I do?” Adora’s voice was bitter.

With her little sister in their hands, Adora did not have other options but to follow their demands.

She knew that it was not a good idea and that she could not trust the words of criminals, but she had no other option.

The gang leader allowed her to visit her sister twice per week so Adora could confirm that Laura was alright, and in exchange, Adora would work for him.

It was not that Adora did not think about rescuing her sister, but back then, she was still in the bloodline awakening realm. She was not confident in rescuing her sister from the gang, and if she failed, her sister would suffer the consequences.

Thus, her only option was to bear with it until she found an opportunity.

The gang leader most likely knew Adora’s intentions, but he did not mind. His plan was to use Adora for as long as he could control her, and after that, get rid of her.

“But both of us underestimated someone.” Adora put on a wry smile. “We underestimated Laura.”

One day when Adora visited Laura, Laura apologized to her.

‘Sorry, sister. If it was not for me, you would not be in this situation.’

Adora did not think much about it at that moment, but when it was time to leave, Laura apologized again.

‘Sorry.’ She said.

And under the astonished gazes of Adora and the gang members keeping watch on her, Laura decisively bit her tongue.

“I don’t remember exactly what happened after that,” Adora said with a sigh. “I only remember my vision becoming red as I watched Laura collapse on the floor while bleeding profusely.

“Everything seemed to become distant. The shouts of panic and surprise of the gang members, the hurried footsteps of them as they checked on Laura, and even my own thoughts.

“I could only kneel on the ground with my eyes wide open in shock as my vision became white.

“The next I remember is that I was holding my knife as all the gang members lay dismembered on the floor.” Adora smiled bitterly.

“After that, I hurriedly dropped my knife on the floor and went to check on Laura.”

“Fortunately, she was still alive. Even though she tried to commit suicide, her attempt was wrongly executed, so she did not die immediately.

“I managed to bring her to an old doctor in the slums and used all my savings to buy the best medication I could afford. In the end, Laura awakened safe and sound the next day.

“But her attempt to commit suicide left something behind.”

“… Her strange illness.” Vlad sighed.

Adora nodded.

“According to the doctor, when she bit her tongue, the mana inside her body moved instinctively to patch her injury. That was one of the reasons she managed to survive.

“But as consequence, her immature mana circuits got damaged. Some sections of her mana circuits became partially broken or bent unnaturally, impeding the normal flow of mana and putting a strong burden on her internal organs.”

Vlad nodded in understanding.

“So that is the reason why you need a seven-star life-replenishing pill.”

“Yes. I heard that high-level life-replenishing pills can reconnect lost limbs and heal damaged organs. According to the doctor, perhaps a high-level life-replenishing pill can return Laura’s mana circuits back to normal.”

Vlad nodded to himself.

In his mind, however, he sighed.

It was true that a high-level life-replenishing pill had miraculous effects and could heal almost anything as long as the person that uses it is not dead.

But seven-start life-replenishing pills were not at that level yet.

According to Vlad’s knowledge, only nine-star life-replenishing pills and above could accomplish something like that.

Vlad wondered if he should reveal the truth to Adora, but after hesitating briefly, he decided not to.

Not now, at the very least.

There was nothing to gain about revealing that information, and it could earn him Adora’s ill will.

Instead, it was better to reveal it when it could bring him the most benefits.

“What happened to the leader of the gang?” He asked instead.

“Can't you guess the answer?” Adora replied as a gleam of hatred flashed through her eyes. “I killed him, and every person related to him or the gang. I did not leave anyone alive.”

Vlad felt a slight chill on his spine when he heard that answer.

‘… It looks like this girl is not so easy to deal with. I will need to be careful when dealing with her.’

He did not show anything on his face, though.

To Adora, he remained indifferent throughout the entire conversation.

“Thank you for telling me your story. It was nice to know about your past.”

“It’s not much of a secret anyway. By the way, what are you planning to do about Crow?”

Vlad fell silent before curving his lips up slightly.

“Actually, I have been thinking about something for a while. Miss Adora, why do you think the bodyguard of that young man came to save Crow?”

Adora was startled and thought for a while.

But no matter how much she thought about it, she could not come to an answer.

Crow was just a piece of shit belonging to the slums, and that young man was definitively a noble. Their lives could not be further apart.

Plus, from what they observed in the dilapidated building, Crow was not that young man subordinated either.

Why then?

“It looks like you already noticed it.” Vlad smiled slightly. “Yes, that young man should not have any reason to send someone to rescue Crow. In other words–”

“It was a coincidence…” Adora murmured.

“Smart. Most likely, the young man or his bodyguards noticed the commotion and discovered that Crow was involved, so they decided to help him in passing. Perhaps he wanted to use it to get a favorable impression from the young miss of the Enchantress Family?” Vlad speculated. “Anyway, what matters in that Crow and that young man should not be related. That means that there is a low chance that the young man's bodyguards are still protecting Crow, and we killed Crow’s three most powerful men as well.”

Adora’s eyes opened wide.

“That means…”

“Yes.” Vlad's smile had a trace of amusement. “Right now, Crow is gravely injured, possibly unconscious, and unprotected.

“Tell me, is there a better opportunity to kill him?”
