Groaning at my words Emma hangs her head “Again?! Sometimes I wonder if you’re not doing too much at once, when is the last time you had a solid eight hours of sleep?”

With a feeble chuckle I gaze at the weathered apartment building across the street noticing new cracks in the concrete of the classroom wall. “Hmm, I can’t really rem-”

That moment the classroom’s door is opened, yet instead of our usual teacher, a casually clad man with stylishly waxed brown hair walks towards the whiteboard.

Following his laid back movements, he seems to be one of the younger teachers of the city. Being roughly 1.6 meters tall and quite thin, he seems to have had a rough upbringing, yet gazing at his passionate brown eyes and kind smile his life seems to have improved since. Wearing an unbuttoned blue denim blouse with a white undershirt, black cargo pants and a pair of blue sneakers he definitely appears to be younger than thirty.

Once the initial shock of seeing a new teacher has passed, I can’t help but feel uneasy about having yet another new teacher.

“Don’t tell me..” Looking up at Emma she appears to be just as disturbed and suspicious as I am.

Raising his hand, the man silences the faint rumoring before gazing into the room. “Morning everyone. Most likely some, if not all of you already know that Miss Yuki has disappeared over the weekend. Because of this predicament, I Kato will take over for the remainder of this semester.”

Wary I look back at Emma “Yuki disappeared as well then?”

Instead of Emma, the brown haired boy sitting next to her responds with a nod “Rumors say she fled to the Alliance in hopes for a better life”

Agitated I look back down at the desk and grumble “Isn’t there anyone who understands you can emigrate to the Alliance in a proper man-”

The man’s loud but warm voice interrupts me “You there! The blonde girl, what’s your name?”

His inquisitive gaze makes me feel rather awkward causing me to stutter as I point at myself “M-Me?”

With an approving smile he nods “Yes, I believe I overheard you saying something about emigrating to the Alliance? Care to share?”

Almost the entire class looks my way, most of whom seem irked by the subject. Their gazes make me feel quite uncomfortable turning my cheeks red in the process. “Well.. okay..”

An encouraging smile forms on his lips as he sits down on the edge of his desk “I’m aware it’s not a popular subject, but I for one am quite curious as how you would go about doing this, as most people seem to abandon everything they have only to try and seek asylum as refugees instead”

A little hesitant I look down at my hands before taking a deep breath and looking back at the teacher. “The truth is, this way isn’t available to all, but everyone in this classroom has a fair shot at becoming a paid citizen of the Alliance. All you need is a class-two degree and appeal for citizenship”

Faintly smiling he chuckles “Those are indeed the requirements, but appealing for citizenship is the hard part and in reality often near impossible. We have no connection with their department of immigration and while there have been cases of people mailing physical letters to said department through the border posts those are generally followed by eternal silence.

Feeling a bit more confident, a smug smile forms on my face before I continue “Indeed, we often hear the stories of failed attempts. However there is an alternative way: sending it directly to the immigration office”

“Oh?” A rather curious expression now adorns his face, making him look even younger and full of energy. Causing a wider smile to form on my face while I think:
[To think there are still adults that are this lively]

Scratching the back of my head I can’t help but reply with a giggle in my voice. “Well I found this while researching for an article, but it’s rather easy to do in just a few steps. Head towards the library and use the computers that are connected to the Alliance network. Although access to the net is very restricted, you can still connect to their immigration website. There you can go to contact us, and use their contact form to ask them about pretty much anything. However if you use it to apply for immigration you’ll get an automated reply that they’re not qualified to handle immigration requests. Yet if you ask them a question under the category of ‘other’ they will send a direct reply to your email address.”

Feeling my tongue dry out, I quickly take a sip of water before I continue. “It took about a week before I got a reply, but this was sent from a regular email address belonging to the immigration department. Using this email, you can create a new conversation in which you state your wishes to immigrate. This resulted in a few emails being sent between us, but in the end I managed to be allowed entry as soon as I have my degree”

The curiosity beams from his face as he smiles “You have?”

Nodding I reply “Yes, as soon as I graduate, I can send a copy of my certificate after which an appointment will be made at the border post”

Genuinely smiling he stands up “Very well then, I wish you the best of luck and once your article has been published I’ll share it with the other teachers so that everyone has access to this method”

Suddenly becoming aware of my surroundings, I reply with a timid smile before letting myself slide down my chair to hide my face behind my laptop’s screen to evade the angry glares of my classmates.

[They really are way too patriotic..]

“You okay?” Feeling a slight nudge I look up at Emma who gives me a compassionate smile.

“Uhu” Replying with a faint nod, I sigh deeply. “I’m aware I’m not exactly loved for my wish to emigrate, but I mean, what choice do I have? We have no considerable wealth, work is getting scarce and food even more”

Placing her hand on mine, she gives me a soft squeeze “I get it, if it wasn’t for my grandparents needing my care.. I’d have joined you”

Audibly exhaling I rest my head on my arms.

[I can hardly tell them my stepdad is an agent of the alliance who fell in love with my mom and is the one who told me of this method so we could join him there..]

Distrait, I moan softly only to receive a tap on my head. “Sleeping in class?”

Absent-minded I gaze up only to be greeted by a frowning Mister Kato causing me to turn red from embarrassment while I shoot up “Ehh no sorry! I’m just rather exhausted and was lost in thought”

Shaking his head he wears a gentle smile “Please focus on the lessons, or if you want to sleep, go to the library”

Baffled by his words I gaze at him in disbelief causing him to laugh “So, where were we with history?”

Smiling Emma points at her screen “Chapter Ten”

Taken aback he places his finger on my notebook and takes a better look “Yet here I see notes of chapter fifteen?”

While Emma bursts into laughter I uncomfortably try to find something to avert my gaze to.

“That’s Naomi for you, I think she’s that far ahead with all subjects”

Perplexed he leafs through my entire notebook before looking at me “You are?”

Mumbling I look at my other notebooks “History is actually my least favorite subject so I’m not as far as with other subjects”

He immediately grabs my English notebook and rifles through “Chapter twenty-three huh..” Chuckling softly he hands me back my notebooks “Then instead of boring you here in the classroom, can I ask you to fetch a few items for me?”

Curious I turn my head and shrug “Sure.. I guess”

In return his smile widens “Thank you, please head to Miss Emery and tell her you’re there to pick up the items I requested, she’ll know what I need”

Still a bit perplexed by his casual attitude I nod and quickly put away my notebooks and laptop before swinging the red bag over my shoulder. But once my eyes cross the horizon I can’t help but frown at the sight of a large black cloud of smoke. “Smoke? An explosion?”

Curious he turns around before groaning and stroking his chin “That’s the border isn’t it?”

A girl with red dyed hair who I believe was called Annette on his right anxiously nods “Yes.. do you think..?”

Astute he shakes his head “It’s most likely nothing serious, we’re the largest neutral city-state, the border patrol can easily deal with it”

The blonde boy sitting next to her nods confidently “We’re the strongest city around, the military can easily deal with some thugs”

Unconvinced yet unwilling to make a big deal out of it, I shrug and head towards the classroom door before sliding it open.

[Why do I have the feeling...]

Slightly on edge I shake my head

[No Naomi stop the doom and gloom, just get those things.]

Scuffing through the halls doesn’t ease the anxiety at all, in fact being alone with my wandering thoughts causes a knot to form in my stomach.

Desperately trying to ignore the unease, I eventually reach the teachers lounge where I knock on the door before entering. Inside my teacher from last year greets me with a smile “Ah, Valefor, anything you need?”

Eased by his smile I nod “Yeah, I was actually looking for Miss Emery, would you know where she is?”

Smiling he nods and motions outside causing his long naturally green hair bound in a ponytail to sway “Yes, she should be outside right now, I believe she was showing the new P.E. teacher the fields”

With a slight bow I smile “Thank you Mister Peridot.”

Kindly smiling he turns back to his coffee while I leave the room and head towards the exit.

***

A few minutes later I arrive at the locker room next to the exit where I suddenly hear loud screaming, shouting and moments later glass shattering.

Startled my body freezes while a strange shiver travels down my spine.

[What the hell is going on?!]

Regaining my senses, I scurry away and hide behind a set of lockers. Just a moment after hiding, black masked soldiers dressed in dark gray and purple camouflaged suits dash through the area.

[The Legion?! That can’t be! We’re near the border of the Alliance!]
