Holding Halo’s hands, he looked into his eyes. It took so much of him to not cry again, “So, I uh… I grew up in a happy home, or at least that is what I believed. My dad, he was a doctor and his parents didn’t like me. I didn’t know any of this until he died.”

“Things were okay until Jason asked me one day, why is it I am an only child and that I am darker than I should be. I asked him what he was talking about and he said, “Your mom is black and your dad is white. Our parents are in interracial relationships, but you don’t even look like your dad.” So I asked my father about it and he just looked at me oddly. I was eight at the time and I wanted to know. So since he didn’t answer me, I went to my mother and asked her, and the look in her eyes scared me. She wasn’t looking at me but behind me and when I turned, I saw my father standing there.”

“Things were okay, I swear it was, but then that night, my dad gave me something to drink, milk, but it tasted weird. When he wasn’t looking, I threw it away, then went to sleep. Later that night, I heard screaming and went to go look at what it was and saw my mother on the floor under him while he beat her. They didn’t see me there, and I watched as he held my mother down and raped her.”

Halo wiped Romeo’s tears away as he continued. He could feel that he, too, was going to cry.

“I went back to my room and couldn’t even sleep. My father left the house later and so I went looking for my mother and found her lying in the shower crying. She caught such a fright when I spoke to her, it’s like she immediately knew what was wrong. When my father came home, it was as though nothing happened. Dinner and everything was okay, but then my dad came into the room and spoke to me about what I saw. He said he’d never do it again, but he did. He just made sure I was never around again.”

“That’s terrible,” Halo said.

Romeo took his hands in his and said, “Halo, I really believed that he stopped and when I found out that he was still hurting her, I confronted him. He never laid a hand on me, but I just couldn’t take it. I knew that if I left him, he’d just hurt my mother. We were alone at home, so when he went to sleep on the couch, I stabbed him with a knife.”

“My mother came home while I was stabbing him and she stopped me. I couldn’t even speak to her. All I did was cry in her arms. When I woke up the next morning, the couch, the body, everything was gone. I asked her many times where it was, but she kept it to herself.”

Halo slowly stepped back from him and asked, “You killed your father, Romeo?”

Romeo stood up as he saw the look in Halo’s eyes and begged, “Please don’t look at me like that.”

Halo quickly grabbed Romeo’s hands out of instinct and looked around. His heart was beating erratically as he looked at him and as he thought he would look at a monster, he was looking into the eyes of someone he wanted.

His lips trembled, and he said, “It’s okay, it’s okay.”

Romeo stared at him for a moment, then he pulled Halo back and sat down. Looking up at him, he continued, “I - I was so confused and I know I did something bad and even though she cried with me, she was much stronger.”

“You are strong, Romeo,” he assured him. “You were only eight. You did it to protect her.”

Romeo’s lip trembled as he thought about it and said, “It happened when I was ten. The lies continued for two years and then I ended his life. I loved him Halo, he was my everything. I wanted to be a doctor like him, but he was doing so many bad things but I didn’t know that he was hurting as much as I did. I wasn’t his son, but he loved me and he never hit me, but I killed him.”

“Don’t let the past hurt you,” Halo said.

He bit on his bottom lip and shook his head, “Na, things just got bad after that. My mother reported him missing after three days and said they had a big fight. The police suspected her, but they had no evidence. A few months later, a man came to visit the house and, just like that, I learnt he was my biological father. He worked for the police force and he was the one who got rid of my father’s body and the shittiest part is that he is my father’s best friend.”

“After that, he moved in and even wanted to make up for lost time. My mother seemed to like him, but I didn’t. She was out one day and he wanted to play basketball out back, but then I refused and told him to leave me alone. He called me disrespectful and that he never wanted me. I should be grateful to him for getting rid of my dad's body.”

“I was so angry at him and told him to fuck off, but he wouldn’t leave. He got in my face and told me he would put me in my place if I ever disrespected him again. My mother walked in on us arguing and when she told him to calm down but he lashed out at her and smacked her. He blamed her for raising a disrespectful child and again, I couldn’t take it. I rushed at him and tried to tackle him down, but he was stronger than me. My mother hit him over the head with a snow globe she got from the shelf by the door.”

“He was dead in front of us and I asked her why. She just looked at me with shock in her eyes. We loaded him into the car and dumped his body on a construction site she knew of. There was wet cement and my aunt, who my mother called, was giving the security guards a good time to distract them. We dumped the body and came home as though nothing happened.”

“But I went to live with my aunt. She told me what really happened. My father was out for a medical conference, then my biological father came over and raped her. When we were under investigation too, they told my mother that she wasn’t the only one and because he was a good cop, they covered up shit. I was so disgusted and did not take it well. My mother wanted me, but she did not want a child like that. Someone who came from a terrible period in her life. But she loved me so much and I just.”

Halo wrapped his arms around him and let Romeo cry. He cried with him because he knew how hard it was to live when you felt unwanted. “It’s okay, cry your heart out. I’m not going anywhere.”

He clutched onto Halo and screamed into his chest. Halo tried his best to not cry louder than Romeo and comforted him.

(Later that day)

Halo was walking away from a long day and jumped when he came around the corner. He looked up and saw Romeo’s car and shook his head. He climbed in and said, “You’re an idiot, do you know that?”

Romeo smirked. “Yes, I know. Do you want to eat?”

“Sure,” he answered, and they drove off. After ordering the food, they sat by the beach and he continued, “All the shit that happened to me can’t be hidden forever. I knew I was depressed and always anxious and my mother tried helping me, too. It wasn’t until I heard about Vanessa, who killed those guys. After she came out of jail, I asked her how it felt and I could speak to her openly. She showed me it was okay to be lost, and all we needed to do was embrace who we were and what happened to us. Then she taught me how to kill with a gun and I’ve been working with her for the mafia ever since.”

Halo shook his head. “Are you okay now?”

Romeo shook his head. “All of this happened around our birthday month and I would just stay at home. But then I met you last week during my downs and I forgot about it.”

Halo smirked and asked, “So I’m your new drug, huh.”

Romeo nodded his head. “Yes, and I just wish I could put you in my pocket.”

Chuckling, Halo shook his head and said, “Okay Mr Washington, let's go home. Tomorrow is a long day.”
