It was easy to imagine what happened when we returned to the campground. Doctors examined me and, having given me a sedative mixed with sleeping pills, sent me to a tent. With Mikael, everything was more complicated. A whole crowd gathered around him. They examined him again and again from all sides. He sent the doctors away in his cheeky way. As a result, making sure that he was healthy, they bandaged his hand and also sent him to rest.

Nina helped me wash off the blood and change my clothes. I lay on my bed, staring at the ceiling of the tent. My stress resistance was terrible. I was convinced of this today. It was not every day you saw people dying because of getting killed, even for your protection. I was falling asleep because the medicine was starting to work, but I heard Alex and the duke arguing.

"Father, do you really think he had nothing to do with this?"

"Why would the Crown Prince do all this?"

That was an option unless he was a total lunatic, of course, but I doubted it. It was too much of a hassle to do that sort of thing.

"Because she turned him down."

"It's utterly absurd. He saved her."

"I don't believe him."

"Mikael voluntarily agreed to marry her. Why do you think the emperor asked me to ask if she wants to marry the prince or not?"

"Father, do you want to give her to the palace? He'll get tired of Ariana in a couple of years. Then he will take a concubine for himself, and not even one."

"It will not happen."

"Why are you so sure of that?"

"Alex, you forget that Mikael himself is the son of a concubine who fell out of favour with the emperor. Which is why he would never do that to her. Besides, I trained him as a child and I know what he is like."

"He is no longer a child. He is a man who wants to marry her only because of a hurt pride." The voices started getting further and further away from me. "You yourself married my mother, after the death of your wife. You, of all people, should know how fickle men are."

"I didn't think I'd hear those words from you. I have always considered you as my son."

I didn't remember anything else because I fell asleep. I slept very soundly. I did not dream of anything, and woke up only in the late evening.

"My lady, are you sure you're all right?" Nina was sitting next to me.

"Don't worry, I'm better now." I smiled weakly.

"What a nightmare. You were attacked right in the domain of the imperial family. If it wasn't for His Highness, you might have been seriously hurt."

Nina smiled sadly and left the room to make tea for me. Behind the curtain, I heard a noise and a familiar cheeky voice.

"How is she?"

"Hello, your highness."

"Let's drop the etiquette. How is Ariana?"

"Your Highness, my sister is still resting. Alex seemed to be still angry."

"Mikael can come in, I'm not sleeping." I got out of bed and sat up.

"You look disgusting." He came in as soon as he heard my voice. There was a smirk on his lips again.

"Did you come to my room to say those words?" I arched an eyebrow.

"You are very polite as always. But if you yell, then it's okay."

"As polite as you are." I smiled at him. "Thanks for saving me today."

"Ariana, are you really not afraid of me?"

"I told you back in that clearing that I didn't." ... Even though you acted like a sadist.

"I just needed to make sure."

"Of what?"

"What I didn't hear." He ran his hand over my cheek.

"Doctors are checking the hearing, but not me."

Mikael laughed out loud. I didn't think he laughed so much. His laugh was not like Aiden's. His was boyish and kind. Mikael leaned toward me. Did he want to kiss me again? I turned away from him.

"You weren't shy in the meadow."

"Why are you doing this again?"

"Because I want to. Moreover, these bastards interrupted us at the most interesting time." He smiled slyly.

"Don't say things like that. You might be misunderstood."

"I don't care." Mikael took my chin for me, and kissed me lightly on the lips. "Don't be afraid. I'll find those who planned it."

"Will you kill them?"

"Of course I will, but first, I will make them regret that they arranged it." He said such terrible words with a smile on his face... what a madman.

"How is your injury?"

"I told you it was just a scratch. You better rest, and do not think about any nonsense."

Mikael smiled and left the room. I sighed. There was some commotion outside, probably because of his guards. After what happened, Mikael would definitely not have let me go alone. But today, I was convinced that he himself could perfectly protect himself.

"What did you talk about?" Alex came to me. He had a bad habit of barging in uninvited.

"Haven't you heard?"

"When did you and the prince become so close? You said you weren't interested in marrying him."

"Nothing has changed, but no one forbade us to communicate." I lay down on the bed again and covered myself. I couldn't marry a man I didn't really know.

"Do you have any idea how absurd that sounds? A man and a woman just talking. Alone. Never heard of such a thing." He smiled wryly.

"Alex, leave me alone. Today I was attacked and I have no strength to quarrel with you."

"You found strength in Mikael."

"Unlike you, he came to ask how I was. Don't quarrel with me."

How noble of him. I immediately caught the sarcasm in his words.

"I'm over it. Get out of my room." Closing my eyes, I turned away from Alex and heard how he threw all things off the table, but did not turn around. Let him go crazy without me. I was already tired of enduring the change in his fickle mood.

Come to think of it, that man said he wanted me. This never happened in the novel. Did someone hire mercenaries to catch me or kill me? I didn't understand anything. Mikael said he had followed me for two months. It turned out that I was already in this body when the surveillance began. Was it possible that in the original story, he followed Ariana, too? And then he saw how spoiled and capricious she was. That was how the book described her.

He didn't like her, so he never paid any attention to her. But everything changed because of me. The prince saw me, not her. That was why Bella did not interest him on the day of the ball. Mikael was already carried away by another person, me. I changed events without even knowing it. And the fact that Mikael was the son of the Empress was a mistake. The Duke said that his mother was a concubine, too. Now I couldn't rely on what I read in the book.
