Still, the cuisine of this world was very unusual to me. I looked tiredly at the meat stew on my plate. Eating meat every day was not for me. The silence reigning in the dining room was simply wildly annoying, but hunger dictated its own rules. I somehow forced myself to touch the food. I was surprised that even Alex and Desmond were unusually silent today.

"Ariana, I need to have a serious talk with you." The duke's tone was cold as ice.

"Of course, father. I will listen to you."

"Be kind, seriously think about my words and what you will answer me."

I didn't like this at all. I think I knew what he wanted to say.

"All right, father. Speak up."

"How do you feel about becoming a contender for the bride of Crown Prince Mikael?"

I remember this moment in the novel. Ariana was happy to hear those words. She thanked her father for a long time. But I was not her, and I know why the duke did it.

"It is not interesting for me." I gave him a dazzling smile.

There was the sound of breaking glass. The Duke dropped his glass and glared at me angrily.

"Do you have any idea what an honour this is for our family?" He jumped up from his chair.

"I understand, but I don't want to be either the princess of this country or the empress."

"Stupid girl. The emperor himself suggested this."

I couldn't contain my laughter anymore and laughed out loud. That man was so greedy for power. His own daughter was just a pawn in a political game for him. He didn't even try to save Ariana when she was sentenced. He was only sorry that she did not manage to become the prince's bride. It reminded me so much of my father from my home world. I wiped away tears of laughter with my fingertips.

"I still don't care."

"What an audacity! You are no different from your mother." The Duke was just seething with anger.

"So hit me and lock me in the room like you did to her."

"Shut up."

"I will not be your pawn. Remember that well, dear father."

"You really got all your feisty nature from that woman."

I laughed out loud again. This man is so disgusting. All the unsaid words his daughter wanted to say, I decided to say.

"You took the only person who loved me from me. My late mother gave her all to you. And now you want to do the same with me?"

My last words had an effect on the duke like a cold shower. He abruptly moved away from the table. I decided to finish him off completely for all the pain he caused Ariana.

"After her death, my love and affection for you also died." I got up from the table.

Desmond looked at me in fear. Lord, what have I done? I completely forgot about him. My feelings took over me. I bit down on my lower lip so hard I could taste the metallic taste of blood. It was necessary to leave quickly. I again looked at the frightened boy and ran out of the dining room.

He heard everything. Desmond wouldn't even come near me now. I ran to a huge oak tree in the depths of the garden, where we often played with it, and fell to my knees. Bitter tears choked me. I covered my face with my hands and cried. I wanted to hurt the duke, but why did it hurt me? It was like I was really Ariana and not Veronica.

Oh, well. Flashback time.

"Nika, sing me a song about a star." Sasha smiled at me. She lay in a hospital bed. They connected a huge dropper with the drug to her thin arm.

"Not night now." I stroked her head.

"When you sing, it doesn't hurt so much. You have such a beautiful voice."

"Okay, my little star."

End of flashback.

I sat on the grass and quietly hummed my sister's favourite song. She often asked me to sing to her. Tears rolled down my cheeks. My heart was compressed from the pain left after my sister's departure. She did not heal and constantly bled. The only person who gave light to my lonely world was in constant pain until her passing.

"Lady, why are you crying?"

A familiar male voice sounded next to me. I opened my eyes and saw Keane.

"What are you doing here?" I jumped up.

"I'm sorry I scared you."

"Are you accompanying His Highness?"

"Not today. It's my day off."

"What brings you to our house?"

"I was just passing by."

Was he passing by the duke's estate, which was a few kilometres from the imperial palace? Did he even realise how stupid that sounded? The brown-haired man stood at attention, like he was under interrogation. I laughed out loud.

"I won't even ask how exactly you got here."

"Sorry lady."

"You didn't do anything to me to ask for forgiveness." I smiled at him.

A smile suits you more than tears. Don't want to take a walk?"

"Where?"

"Today is the last day of the summer festival, there will be fireworks."

"How do we get there?"

"Just like how I got to you."

"Good. I trust you completely." Leaving this house for a little while didn't seem like such a bad idea to me.

"Don't say such words, lady." Keane looked at me sadly.

"Why?"

I was starting to want things I shouldn't have.

I didn't understand what this guy meant? I looked at him carefully, and noticed that a leaf was stuck in his hair. Did he get into the manor through the wall in the garden? I stood on my tiptoes because he was quite tall, and removed a small leaf from his brown hair. Keane looked at me in surprise. I showed him the leaf and smiled.

"Lady, you are really beautiful when you smile."

"Do you really think so?"

"Yes, and you have a wonderful voice." Did he hear me sing?

"Sir Keane. You seem to have suggested that I take a walk. Is your offer still valid?"

"Yes."

"Then I'll gladly run away with you." I held out my hand to him.

"Lady..."

He muttered something under his breath and gently took my hand. As I suspected, Keane entered the manor through the garden. On the second attempt, I managed to climb over a stone wall in a long dress. I never thought I would do this, but I even liked it.

"Forgive me. I made you climb the wall. This is unacceptable for a lady like you." Keane shook his head.

Don't be sorry. It was a lot of fun. Moreover, no one forced me. I asked you myself."

"I will never cease to be amazed at you, lady."

"What's your friend's name?" I carefully stroked the beautiful grey mane of the horse, which stood not far from the estate in a small clearing.

"Raphael."

"I think it suits him."

"Let me help you get on it, don't be afraid of anything."

Keane took me by the waist, put me in the saddle with ease, and quickly jumped from behind. We were so close to each other that I could feel his breath. Goosebumps ran treacherously through his body. Even the fact that I had never ridden a horse scared me less than the closeness of the man next to me.

"Lady, are you ready?"

"Yes." I leaned against the man's chest. No matter how uncomfortable and scary I felt, I definitely didn't want to fall.
