Another two days passed without much hassle or any encounters. The sun was once again up in the sky protecting the survivors from the dangerous inhabitants of the mountains. The group was finally making considerable progress despite the excessive heat of the last few days of summer, proving the fierce desire of the people to escape the nightmare and return to their normal daily lives.

At the back of the group, three young villagers were talking about their odds of survival, clearly worried about what might happen the following night.

"What do you think? Do we have a chance to get out of these woods?"

"Last few days we haven't met any creepy monsters, so yes. We need to believe that we can make it."

"That night we woke up and saw blood everywhere in the camp. It was pretty terrifying. What if we are the ones that will die during the next attack?"

"Stupid question, dude. There is nothing we can do, but fight with everything  we have."

"If Anta was here with us, she would've known what to do."

"Yeah, man. That's true."

"Hey, you three at the back! Try to stay closer to the group for your own safety," Oliver shouted and waved at them from the front of the line.

A few hours later, before the final push through the forest during the last few hours of daylight, they decided to take a break, so Paul can rest his feet for a bit. They were eating mainly fruits as there was no sign of any mammals around.

"When are we gonna get a fucking proper meal with meat? I'm so done with this shit!" said an eighteen years old guy and threw the green apple he took a bite from as far as he could. "These creatures are terrorizing us, eating our only source of protein, and killing us in our sleep."

B stood up from the stump annoyed by the guy's remark.

"Eating our only source of protein?! Proper meal with meat?! Are you still mommy's little poop-in-the-pants boy?" she said lifting her palms near her shoulders and mocking him.

"Hey! Don't insult me!"

"Or what?" said the girl as she approached him.

Everyone else was watching the argument between the two with great interest, except for Paul who was eating his pear and looking at the ground. Oliver also decided not to interfere as he thought the youngster needed a life lesson.

"What kid, huh? Did your mom forget to put a tongue in your mouth when she gave birth to you?"

The teenager wanted to hit the girl so badly, but he knew that he would get his ass kicked if he tried.

"Be happy you are still alive and well. We have something to put in our mouths, so we don’t die from hunger. In this kind of situation, that's all we need."

"Be happy my ass! I'm not a girl to put dicks in my mouth as you did when you swallowed Akira's balls."

B went red from embarrassment and pushed the young man with her foot forcing him to fall on his bottom.

"So you went to spy on us, but you were too much of a virgin to join, so you masturbated watching our threesome?" she asked with a nervous smile.

"What? I would never--"

He got interrupted by the girl grabbing him by the jaw. Those were the last words he said for the rest of the day as he was beaten to a pulp. Oliver had to intervene to stop her.

The girl was now so embarrassed that she wanted to leave and spend some time alone, but she knew that doing so may result in people dying while she was not around.

She did not have much time to worry about it because the deadly whispering that instilled fear during the village attack could now be heard again.

"Make a circle, everyone!" B shouted worried, "They are everywhere around us hiding in the trees, behind them, and in the bushes. I can smell them."

"Do as she said!" Oliver stood up, unsheathed his sword, and joined the circle that was already starting to form.

*You will die.*

*There is no escape.*

*The whole mountain is our nest.*

*Offer us the girl as a sacrifice and you will survive.*

*We will let you go if you give us her dead body.*

"Why would we believe all that crap?" Oliver shouted angrily.

*One of us is coming from the south tonight to send a message, wait here!*

After three minutes of constant voices coming from all around, the whispers of the creatures seemed to be fading away. Soon they were completely gone. Those three minutes of pure hell made some survivors hold their breath without even noticing.

"Breathe everyone, try to relax," Paul spoke in a calm voice. No fear was showing on his face whatsoever.

"They are gone," B let everyone know, "They used the shadows of the trees to come close to us before nightfall."

The survivors breathed a collective sigh of relief knowing there was no danger nearby anymore.

The darkness soon began to expand between the trees and into the more open areas of the forest as the night pushed the light away, and the moon retook its place on the starry sky. They were now all getting ready to camp around the fire for an important discussion regarding what was better to do next in order to survive.

"Do it, don't be a pussy," Luke pushed Akira toward the only girl left in the group. He stumbled a little but managed to regain his balance quickly. He was nervous to talk to her about what had happened.

"Hey, B! Sorry about earlier, I was pretty sure nobody followed us," he said while moving his right hand through his hair nervously.

She was sharpening her sword with a rock.

"If you are sorry, then try to convince these fucking morons that they will die without me. They already gossip about me being a bitch and deserving to die so they can leave through God's mercy. I'm only wasting my time here for Anta who sacrificed herself so we can live. That's why I'm sticking around."

"We'll try," he said in a humble voice and left.

After clapping his hands a few times, Oliver stood up and spoke in a loud tone.

"Paul's health is worsening much slower than we anticipated, but we are still in desperate need of someone with great knowledge about herbs and antidotes. We don’t know when something sudden might happen. Anyone?"

It was quiet, the only answer he got was the night-time song of the crickets. Paul raised his hand to ask Oliver to drop the subject.

Seeing that he's not getting anywhere and some people are even avoiding his glance, he continued, "Let's move on to our second problem of the night. We will NOT deviate from the path because we will get lost for sure and end up dying and becoming meat for the monsters. We don't know what we might run into anyway, but at least we know for sure that this road takes us to the Kingdom of Riveria. If anyone is against it, please speak now."

People started chattering amongst themselves upon hearing his decision, but in the end, nobody tried to contradict the young leader.

"And the last thing to talk about tonight is B's sacrifice. Is there anyone who thinks we need to willingly give our strongest warrior to the enemy?"

Luke raised his hand and began to talk.

"In the impossible case scenario in which B allows us to sacrifice her for our safety, then what? Pray even harder for their mercy?"

"I disagree! I'm not gonna die for her. We've been offered a chance to survive. Why not use it?" a youngster shouted angrily.

"Exactly!" another one found the courage to speak his mind, "Just because you screwed her, doesn't mean you have to defend her as well."

"Shut up, you all! Luke is right!" Akira stood up and joined the discussion firmly defending his friend.

"We need to remember that this is not what our old woman would have wanted. We need to try and survive together like a family. We all lived in the same place for so many years, after all. Stop being so egoistic and start acting like real human beings instead of monsters." Tears were falling down his cheeks as he began to stutter.

Oliver took a few steps toward Akira which made the argument stop.

"Good job, young man!" he said as he hugged him with his masculine arms. "Now for anyone who believes that there is still hope and goodwill left in this world, this hug is for you. Let's embrace each other."

The tears fell like a waterfall on B's cheeks after the emotional speech. She was the first one who joined by jumping in and putting her arms around the two guys' necks.

After a quick sigh, the one who started the fight apologized and joined in as well. Thing that led to everyone slowly approaching the big circle of hopes and tears. They were all on the same page now of starting to build trust and feelings for each other.

Despite the numerous fights they've had due to the curse of the witch, and the number of years they lived forced to sacrifice and watch each other die, they were all still humans afraid of the death that came to them unexpectedly. If there was a person who could understand them better than anyone else, that person was now standing right next to them.

Such was the danger that the most unfriendly villagers were now desperately clinging to each other hoping for a better future. At this point, if they lose their humanity, they lose their lives too.

However, there was still someone missing from the circle, and that person was Paul who was simply sitting down on a stump watching them with cold eyes.

The singing of the crickets was getting louder with every second as if they were trying to foretell something, meanwhile, six crows were now flying in a circle ten meters above the group of survivors.

DEATH WAS COMING WITH HUGE LEGS!
