She sat down beside the same window she did every day, not understanding why she wasn't allowed out or to play with the other child. She was only allowed to watch them truly her tiny window. She Missed her mommy and daddy, she can't remember the last time she saw them. They told her they would come back but they didn't, she wasn't sure how long she had been locked away. The only time she was allowed out was when they took her to the bathroom, she would hear the voice of other children as well. But they sounded happy, she wasn't. She wanted her mother and daddy. The only thing that kept her happy was seeing her brother playing in the fields with the other kids. At least one of them was happy.
She didn't understand why her parents dropped her in this strange place, she was a good kid. Her mother always said she was her angle, so she believed her when she said she would be back. But that was months ago. She held her old and damaged teddy bear, with beady black eyes and a small, sad smile. Its brown fur was dirty and coarse, darkened over the years by dirt, and one of its arms had been stretched out from being pulled on too much. Part of the back was ripped and was held together with a clip.
She sat there staring, for hours. Till the sun was gone and on one was felt on the field. All she could hear was silence now and her grumbling stomach. She hated the food here, she missed getting a happy meal. The food here was disgusting, all she got was what looked like beans and vegetables. Sometimes they didn't bring her food, she just eats the little piece of chocolate she finds on her bed every morning.
She moved to her small bed that was old with lumps when the sun was gone. The room had no drapery curtains at the windows, no pictures on the wall. She told herself she wouldn't cry tonight, she was a big girl and big girls don't cry. She was just afraid that the person would come in and stare at her again. The same person always came at the same time every day and just stares at her until she falls asleep. She was too scared to open her eyes in case it was a monster, she made sure her eyes were closed. She wanted to wait till morning to see what it was but always fell asleep and by the time she would wake up she was alone again.
She froze when she had the door opening, closing her eyes tighter. The footsteps were tiny, she heard her breath as they got close to her praying whatever it was wouldn't come on her bed. Just stay at a corner looking at her.
"I know you are awake," the person said, it sounded like a boy. She was still frozen.
"I won't hurt you," he said moving closer to her bed "My name is Xavier"
He paused waiting to see if she would reply, he wasn't sure why he spoke to her today. Every night he was here she would pretend she was sleeping but he knew she was awake. She could hear her breathing heavily, but not for long.
"I brought you some cookies this time," he told her placing it on her bed. It was his dessert he was giving her, instead of eating it he always gave her all his desserts. His father told him away into a girl's heart is with chocolate, so he always asked for chocolate but tonight the chef gave him cookies. He wasn't happy about it but it still had chocolate chips in it.
He let out a breath, he knew she wouldn't talk to him. She didn't talk to anyone, all the other kids think she's a freak cause of that and he hated them for that. He made his way to the door giving up but her tiny little voice stopped him.
"Thank you," she told him, she didn't forget her manners. She sat up slowly looking at the tiny boy that brought her cookies. He wasn't scary, he was cute. She picked up the cookie slowly biting into it. Signing the second it melted in her mouth.
"You like it," he asked walking to the bed
"Hmm," she told him, shoving the whole cookie in her mouth making him laugh.
"Your brother misses you," he tells her
"You talked to him!" She jumped up excited
"Shhh, don't be too loud" he warns her "yes, he told me your name was Nessie"
"Ewww, no it's Vanessa" she always hated when he called her that.
"Vanessa, I like that"
"Thanks, my mommy picked it. Can you take me to my brother"
"I'm sorry I can't. We aren't allowed to here" he tells her making her confused. She starts to tear up, missing her brother. Why can't she see him?
"Don't cry, should I get you chocolates?" he asked her not wanting her to be upset.
"No, I want my brother and mommy" she hiccups not being able to stop her tears.
"Don't worry, I will take you away from here and you be able to see them all the time. I just have to get bigger so I can protect you from the evil men" he whispered sitting at the edge of her bed. He doesn't want them to hear him.
"Really?" she looks at his green eyes
"You promise"
"Yes, my daddy said I will be big one day and take over and then we can be together forever. And I promise to get you all the food you want"
"Can we go somewhere away from here, like Disney land? I have never been" she asked getting excited
"Yeah, and your brother can come. We'll have so much fun" he tells her as she laid her head on her pillow less bed.
"I like you, Xavier, you're my new friend" she yawns robbing her eyes. He smiles when he hears that, he wanted to be her friend.
"Are you gonna be here when I wake up?" she asked getting sleepy.
"Yes, I promise," he tells her.
But he wasn't, she woke up to a cold empty bed like always and never saw him again. She knew he wasn't real, she just imagined him.. But somehow chocolate would always be waiting for her in the mornings till the night she left.
