Chapter 9 Part 2: Cerberus

The following day, we decided to form the Cerberus Subjugation Party. There were only a handful of people on it due to the fact that we still have to leave the main unit to defend the base. People with unique skills were gathered to form the party.

The lead members were the Tank Specialist Kim Tae-Byung, Ranger Specialists, twins An Yu-Soo and An Yu-Ra. While Kwon Seong-Min will be the team leader. Seol Min-Jeon didn’t join the team because both I and twins are already enough to do the reconnaissance. We can’t just have everyone with Unique skills join up. That would leave the main unit with just regular awakeners.

Anyways, we didn’t know how long it would take us to subdue Cerberus so we had a couple of scouts pack more supplies and luggages.

There were a couple of people who wanted to play it safe, and just wanted us to stop doing scouting mission for awhile until the monster disappear.

However, there is no way we can do that. We’d eventually run out of supplies. With the Turtles changing habitats we’d have to find another way to find food. Also, there’s no way anyone can guarantee that the monster wouldn’t stay in the area and just use it as its base. If it stays on the area, it would be difficult for other monsters to even come near it. That’s why it’s so much better for us to resolve this crisis now than wait for later.

“There are claw marks here.”

An Yu-Ra said while looking at a tree that had sprouted in between two collapsed concrete chunks. It had been more than a month since the gate incident happened, but strangely enough the trees that sprouted out of nowhere were already as thick and sturdy as a ways old century tree. As we observe its trunk, claw marks were indeed visible on it.

“It’s not a mark that turtle bugs could make.”

Kwon Seong-Min commented briefly.

“It looks like he was just hanging around here…”

An Yu-soo pointed at what appeared to be an excrement. It was a pretty good sight for sore eyes.

“We’ll have to find an area to camp in soon.”

Kwon Seong-Min quietly whispered instructions to the two scouts, then they started moving in search for a suitable place for us to settle in for the night.

The twins and I searched around for other traces of Cerberus, but we never found anything. As it got darker, we made a little bonfire then quickly erected our tents.

Dinner was a simple soup with sliced monster meat. Chow Mein1 Porridge would be the most appropriate way to describe it. Since I couldn’t carry around cooking utensils, I used to replace meals with these to reduce my burden.

In fact, even though cooked food is good. If you don’t have the skills to save yourself, just don’t cook, nor light a fire. It might just attract monsters.

“Do we really have to eat?”

“Uh. It’s just the same every day.”

Most of the dishes eaten during scouting mission are always the same. So most of us are quite tired of it. If we can choose to have a different dish next time, we’d have something else.

“I guess it’s going to take some time, right? I’m going to go sleep for awhile.”

“Go take your rests. We might have a lot of things to do tomorrow.”

I glanced at Kwon Seong-Min while he was scooping the soup. This Subjugation will be quite important for him as well. Since he was assigned as the team leader, this is probably a test assigned for him by Choi Woo-Do.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen a D-class monster, is it very different from a common monster?”

“Yes. If it’s D-class, it’s not like the normal monsters we’ve seen. With it being a ranked monster, it would definitely be out of ordinary.”

E, F, Unranked, these three together are called the ‘Normal’ type. These types of monsters are commonly found on almost every gate. Since they’re normal, the item drops and other miscellaneous items that we can get from it are all of little value.

“Also, D-Class monsters and above, have their own Unique Skills.”

“Do you know what Cerberus’ unique skill is?”

“As far as I can remember, maybe…”

I frowned slightly. Cerberus is a type of monster that lives on territories that can meet a certain condition. So I haven’t encountered it often. However, if I can remember correctly, it’s unique skill should be…

“……It’s a barrier.”

Zwinggg!

We suddenly heard an ominous sound. Kwon Seong-Min stood up with his sword then quickly scan the surroundings.

Crap…

“Wait… Where is everybody?”

There was no one around.

“It seems like we’re trapped in a barrier?”

“That’s very likely.”

Unless it’s a High-Level Cerberus, it wouldn’t have the ability to trap everyone inside a barrier. Most likely it only conveniently trapped the two of us inside it.

Barriers Skills can often create some sort of an enclosed space, that’s completely disconnected from the outside world. Of course it’s not like those grandiose concept like space creation, it’s not a separate space, just an enclosed area surrounded by barriers that would make anyone who sees or pass by it, not recognize it.

With my Spatial Interference skill, I would originally be able to break this level of barriers, but for some reason I couldn’t.

Don’t tell me my skills were locked after my regression?

I noticed it before, the control I have over the skill seemed to have dulled. I used to be able to reconstruct the space surrounding me even by using a tiny speck of dust. I can just use my sharp senses to do it. However, right now I feel my skill control have worsened.

“Then… how do we get out?”

Kwon Seong-Min asked nervously. He sounded so desperate, like he was asking me for a grand solution…

Unfortunately…

“If you want to escape, we have to defeat Cerberus.”

The best way to escape is by destruction. Since, I can’t destroy the barrier, we have no choice but to defeat the caster. Which was in this case, Cerberus.

His unique skill was also one of the reasons Cerberus got its name. Just like the Cerberus, who barred the gates of hell to guard against trespassers, this monster also bars people. Just not to enter, but to escape. He was not defending as well, he uses his barriers to attack them.

“It should be around here by now…”

I was able to sense signs of something approaching us earlier. I quickly hid the hand holding the karambit behind my back. My body suddenly tensed up. My muscles tightened and contracted.

«Spatial Interference»

I quickly activated my unique skill. Cerberus can pop up anytime. I have to be ready. Blue light glowed inside my eyes. I was then able to clearly recognize the approaching movement.

“It’s coming.”
