Chapter 18: Up And Coming

I headed out and pulled up a map to get to the starting location for level-one monsters, but a notification window popped up as I was about to pull up the map. 

 

[Do you wish to be guided by GPS?] 

[Yes/No]

 

I quickly selected yes because I had no idea where I was going and didn't feel like getting lost. Then another window popped up in front of me with a woman's voice coming from nowhere. 

 

"Welcome to the GPS system. Please input your destination." 

 

I was about to speak but then stopped when I realized I had no idea how this worked. Then another window popped up in front of me with a bunch of options, and I quickly selected the one for starting locations for level one monsters before another window popped up with a map. 

 

I followed the directions that were given to me and started to drive, pulling onto a freeway. It was night, but there were very few vehicles on the road, which was strange, but then the map started to flash red as three dots, one large and two smaller ones, started to come up behind me in the distance.

 

"What the hell?" I muttered before stepping on the gas, but as I did, the car behind me started to speed up as well. Then I realized that they were monsters, and my heart started to race. "Shit!" 

 

One of them was like a rhino on wheels, with a big sharp horn on the front of it. The other two were like smaller car-shaped hyenas. Both things were like nothing I had ever seen before.

 

I quickly pulled out my gun and aimed it at the side window of the SUV, and time slowed as I shot with my Glock. I hit one of the hyena cars and then backed off, but I was rammed by the rhino tank right after. So instead, I swerved in and out, trying to lose them while also not crashing myself. 

 

It was a lot harder than it looked in movies because there were actual obstacles this time around instead of just empty roads like in every Hollywood movie ever made about car chases, apparently. But eventually, I managed to lose them by driving into an abandoned parking garage and then through a construction site before getting back onto the freeway and heading toward my destination again. 

 

"That was close," I muttered before sighing in relief as my heart slowly stopped racing from adrenaline. Then another notification window popped up again, causing me to groan inwardly because, seriously? Couldn't this wait until after my heart had stopped trying to beat out of my chest?

 

[1 Level 8 and 2 level 5 monsters are locked onto your signal.]

 

"Are you fucking kidding me?" I muttered as I hit the gas again, but this time there were no cars to lose them in, and they quickly caught up to me. Then one of them smashed into the back end of my SUV hard enough that I was almost thrown through the windshield. "Fuck!"

 

I quickly put on my seatbelt as another one rammed into me from the side, sending me careening toward the edge of the freeway before I managed to regain control and get back in my lane. Then both monsters backed off slightly as they waited for an opportunity to strike again while also not getting too close because, apparently, they were afraid of getting shot like last time. 

 

I don't know how long we drove like that, with them ramming into me every now and then or trying to run me off the road, but eventually, I saw my destination coming up ahead. It was a large open field, but I could see other monsters in it, but there were small level-one mecha-monsters. This field was where I could put my class to use.

 

I quickly turned off the freeway and headed towards the field, putting the pedal down as I pulled out my Glock again. I swerved around the small monsters as the bigger ones followed, but within three shots, I already got a level-up notification as I hammered the gas, fishtailing out of the way as the rhino tank flew by me.

 

I quickly turned and put two bullets in its back before turning my attention to the hyena cars, but as I did, they both rammed into me from behind, sending me careening toward a group of small monsters. But before I could hit them, time froze again as everything moved in slow motion.

 

I quickly regained control and put on the brakes hard enough that smoke came up from the tires before turning sharply and going off-road out of the clearing. The SUV bounced harshly over the rough terrain, but it was better than getting mauled by those things or, worse yet, killed. 

 

Then as I was driving through a copse of trees, one of them crashed into me head-on while the other one tried to come at me from behind but ended up crashing into the first one instead. It created an opening for me to get away, so that's exactly what I did. 

 

I don't know how long I drove like that or how many close calls I had, but then I hit a stump that tore the front axle of the SUV out, and I came to a dead stop. I flung myself out of the vehicle as the rhino tank smashed it from behind, sending it flipping as I pulled out my rifle. 

 

The hyena cars quickly surrounded me as I ran and aimed at the rhino tank. Time slowed down again, and I put a bullet between its eyes using my armor-piercing skill, and it exploded. Then without missing a beat, I turned using Double Tap and put two in each of the hyena cars before they could even move. As they both blew up, I was hit with another five level-up notification window. 

 

I quickly got to my feet but froze when another notification window popped up in front of me because, seriously? Wasn't one life-threatening situation enough for one day? Apparently not, because then the ground started shaking before splitting open, and a giant worm monster thing started to come out. "What the fuck is this?"

"Well," Chloe said as she leaned back in her chair and looked at me with an amused expression on her face, "You certainly had an eventful first day."

"Yeah," I muttered as I shifted uncomfortably in my seat while trying not to think about that giant worm monster thing that had chased me all over the city until morning when it finally gave up and went back underground again. "It's been really fun." 

 

Chloe chuckled at that before she sighed and leaned forward, putting her elbows on the table while steepling her fingers together as she looked at me intently now instead of just amused like before. She had been waiting for me when I got back, but I didn't know what she was doing there. 

 

"So," she started, "I'm guessing you're wondering why I'm here?" 

 

"Yeah," I said, "I kind of figured it had something to do with the mission since you were the one who debriefed me on it." 

 

"Well," Chloe said as she sat back in her chair again while crossing her legs and steepling her fingers together in front of her chest now as she looked at me intently. "That's partially true, but you can think of me as a partner. I can help you with all the things that you need and want; you can also select my form. I don't think you want me looking like a child unless you are into that kind of thing, but that will reduce the number of goddesses that will want to spend time with you."

 

"Wait... what? No, I don't want you to be a child if I am... wait, does that mean that you want to have..." I said, my voice trailing off, and Chloe smiled.

 

"Now I have your attention? Good," she said before uncrossing her legs and leaning forward again while steepling her fingers together in front of her chest. "Yes, I want to have a physical relationship with you, but that is not the only thing that I want. I also want to be your partner in all things, including combat." 

 

"So you're saying that you want to be my girlfriend and fight monsters with me?" I asked skeptically because this all sounded too good to be true. 

 

"Yes," Chloe said as she sat back in her chair and crossed her arms over her chest while looking at me intently. "I know it sounds too good to be true, but it's not. There are many goddesses who would love nothing more than to do what I am offering you."

 

"Really? That did not seem like the case before when I was up there," I said with a sigh, but Chloe grinned.

 

"While you are here, there is a way that Astral's can watch you, but that means pulling them out of regular time, and then they are forced to stay until you are done. After that fight, there is barely a sitting room. I think that by the end of your run, there will hardly be standing room. What you are doing is nothing short of invigorating to watch! I had thought that you were going to go back in and die before I got the chance to help you, but you seemed to be taking things seriously this time," Chloe explained and then pulled out a tablet. "I am special, meaning that I can take on a few different forms, but they are just me at different ages."

 

I looked at Chloe in her cute green and white schoolgirl outfit, but her body was underdeveloped, making her look like a very young girl. Then I looked down at the tablet and coughed really hard. Holy shit! This was Chloe?

 

"You...you look like you're about my age," I managed to get out after a few minutes, and Chloe grinned. 

 

"Correct! Now, if you want me to look like this, then it requires an offering of your blood," she said as she pulled out a knife and pricked her finger before holding it out toward me. "Just a drop on my tongue will do."

 

I looked at the knife skeptically before looking at Chloe again, who was now grinning at me knowingly as if she could read my thoughts. I sighed before taking the knife from her and pricking my finger before holding it out toward her. She leaned forward and licked the blood off of my finger seductively before sitting back with a satisfied grin on her face. 

 

"Now, we are linked," she said as she closed her eyes and took a deep breath in through her nose while exhaling slowly through pursed lips. When she opened them again, they were glowing green, but then they returned to normal just as quickly. "I can feel your emotions now." 

 

"What? Why?" I was confused because that didn't seem like something that should be possible, let alone desirable. 

 

Instead of answering, Chloe's body started to grow.

 

"I... What the hell?" I asked as I watched her body grow and change until she looked like she was in her early twenties. Her clothes changed as well into a skin-tight black catsuit that left nothing to the imagination. Even her hair had changed color from blonde to black, and it was now styled into a sleek bob. "What did you do?"

 

"Like I said," Chloe purred as she leaned forward while steepling her fingers together in front of her chest again while looking at me intently with her bright green eyes. "We are now linked. I can feel your emotions, and you will be able to understand mine." 

 

"So," I started slowly as I tried to wrap my head around this new development, "You're saying that you want to be my girlfriend and fight monsters with me?" 

 

"Among other things," Chloe said with a smirk before leaning back in her chair again and crossing her arms over her chest while looking at me intently. "So what do you say? Are you game?"

 

I stared at the sexy cat woman before me and grinned. 

 

Life really was a box of chocolates.
